We were talking books and poetry (surprise!) and they asked if I&#8217;d heard of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pshares.org\/authors\/authordetails.cfm?prmAuthorID=760\"><strong>Phyllis Janowitz<\/strong><\/a>. &#8220;Nope,&#8221; I said. Well, they said, this will not do. She&#8217;s a professor of theirs at Cornell, and they feel very strongly that she is AWESOME and should be more widely known. Then <a href=\"http:\/\/geekgirlfriday.blogspot.com\/\"><strong>Dana<\/strong><\/a> read the first part of this poem, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pshares.org\/issues\/article.cfm?prmArticleID=117\"><strong>&#8220;Veal,&#8221;<\/strong><\/a> to me, and my jaw dropped. &#8220;That IS awesome,&#8221; I said. They pushed me out the door with two of her books and some <a href=\"http:\/\/eatthishouse.blogspot.com\/2008\/07\/long-weekend-living-blueberry-buckle_23.html\"><strong>blueberry buckle<\/strong><\/a>. Or was it the <a href=\"http:\/\/eatthishouse.blogspot.com\/2008\/07\/silver-palate-lemon-blueberry-tart.html\"><strong>lemon blueberry tart<\/strong><\/a>? I forget &#8211; they were both <em>delicious<\/em>. But the POEMS, people! Oh. My. God. I find myself in total agreement: we should all know who Phyllis Janowitz is.<\/p>\n<p>See what you think:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I love to watch the butcher<br \/>\nwipe the sharp<br \/>\nblade on his<br \/>\napron stained<br \/>\nwith fresh blood. I&#8217;m<br \/>\ngoing to marry him <\/p>\n<p><font color=\"ffffff\">&#8212;-<\/font>WHAM <\/p>\n<p>the side of beef split open<br \/>\nhe tenderly spreads<br \/>\nit like a woman&#8217;s legs<br \/>\nbetween smeared fingers<br \/>\nstroking the cold smoothness <\/p>\n<p>from his fingertips<br \/>\n<font color=\"ffffff\">&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;&#8211;<\/font>bloody red<br \/>\ndrops on the floor spotting<br \/>\nthe sawdust there fluffs of fat<br \/>\nlie covered decently<br \/>\nthe meat is red and lean. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Want more? <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pshares.org\/issues\/article.cfm?prmArticleID=117\"><strong>Here&#8217;s the rest.<\/strong><\/a> And spread the word.<\/p>\n<p>(*I&#8217;m a vegetarian.
