And, in honor of the children who will be in my house tonight, I&#8217;m going to share some Halloween children&#8217;s poetry. <\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/jules\/halloween cover1.jpg\" border=1>I had the pleasure of hosting the session of children&#8217;s poet <a href=\"http:\/\/www.charlesghigna.com\/\"><strong>Charles Ghigna<\/strong><\/a> (a.k.a. &#8220;Father Goose&#8221;) at the recent <a href=\"http:\/\/tn-humanities.org\/festival\/index.php\"><strong>Southern Festival of Books<\/strong><\/a>, and I got his permission to share some poems today from his <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Halloween-Night-Charles-Ghigna\/dp\/0762428201\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&#038;s=books&#038;qid=1224814268&#038;sr=8-1\"><strong>Halloween Night: Twenty-One Spooktacular Poems<\/strong><\/a><\/em>, published in 2003 by Running Press Kids. That opening verse is the last one from his &#8220;Beware the Werewolf.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.atomicalley.com\/index2.html\"><strong>Adam McCauley<\/strong><\/a> illustrated this title, and&#8212;since I love his work&#8212;I asked if he could share some of the art work from it, and he obliged as well.*<\/p>\n<p>So, take a moment to enjoy a couple of Halloween poems, both told from the point-of-view of children on Halloween. (Could there <em>be<\/em> a more exciting time of year for them?) If you are looking for the types of simple rhymes that will engage the very wee&#8217;est child at this time of year, this is a good title. Many, many thanks to Charles and Adam for sharing. Enjoy!<\/p>\n<p><center><font size=4>&#8220;Costume Crazy&#8221;<\/font><\/p>\n<p>The year I dressed<br \/>\nup as a witch,<br \/>\nMy ugly wig began to itch. <\/p>\n<p>The year I dressed<br \/>\nup as a clown,<br \/>\nMy silly nose<br \/>\nkept falling down.<\/p>\n<p>The year I dressed<br \/>\nup as a ghost,<br \/>\nI tripped and fell<br \/>\nand hit a post.<\/p>\n<p>This year I know<br \/>\njust what I&#8217;ll be.<br \/>\nI&#8217;m dressing up<br \/>\nto go as me.<\/center><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/jules\/CostumeCrazy.JPG\" border=1><\/p>\n<p><center><font size=4>&#8220;Pumpkin Patched&#8221;<\/font><\/p>\n<p>We drove out to the pumpkin patch<br \/>\nTo see what we could find.<br \/>\nBut soon we found that each of us<br \/>\nHad something else in mind. <\/p>\n<p>My mom said, &#8220;Pick a shiny one<br \/>\nThat&#8217;s ripe and rather round,&#8221;<br \/>\nMy dad said, &#8220;Pick the biggest one<br \/>\nThat we have ever found.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>My sister shouted, &#8220;Pick the one<br \/>\nThat&#8217;s fatter than the rest!&#8221;<br \/>\nBut I knew if we looked around<br \/>\nWe&#8217;d find which one was best. <\/p>\n<p>We came upon a little one<br \/>\nThat sat there all alone<br \/>\nLooking like she needed us<br \/>\nTo please just take her home. <\/p>\n<p>My parents said she was too small,<br \/>\nHer color was not right.<br \/>\nBut when they saw me holding her,<br \/>\nThey took her home that night. <\/p>\n<p>They placed her on the table top<br \/>\nAnd asked us to decide<br \/>\nWho would cut the eyes and mouth<br \/>\nAnd who would scoop inside. <\/p>\n<p>They handed me the carving knife,<br \/>\nBut I just shook my head.<br \/>\nI couldn&#8217;t bear to cut her up<br \/>\nNo matter what they said. <\/p>\n<p>And so she sits just as she was<br \/>\nUpon the windowsill.<br \/>\nInstead of Jack-o&#8217;-Lantern now<br \/>\nThis year we have a Jill.<\/center><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/jules\/PumpkinPatched.JPG\" border=1><\/p>\n<p>The one, the only Kelly Herold has the Poetry Friday round-up today at <a href=\"http:\/\/kidslitinformation.blogspot.com\/\"><em><strong>Big A, little a<\/strong><\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><center>* * * * * * *<\/center><\/p>\n<p>* Speaking of McCauley, another great Halloween picture book read for you and your favorite child is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rmichelson.com\/RMichelson_Galleries.html\"><strong>Richard Michelson&#8217;s<\/strong><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Oh-Not-Ghosts-Richard-Michelson\/dp\/0152051864\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&#038;s=books&#038;qid=1224815660&#038;sr=8-1\"><em><strong>Oh No, Not Ghosts!<\/strong><\/em><\/a> (Harcourt, 2006), which I reviewed back <a href=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/sevenimpossiblethings\/?p=344\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a> at 7-Imp at the end of &#8217;06 when our images were <font size=4>tragically<\/font> small. If you go <a href=\"http:\/\/www.atomicalley.com\/books\/ohno_ghosts\/1.html\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a> to McCauley&#8217;s site, you can see several spreads from the book. This one&#8217;s a winner in my household; my girls want to hear it all year long. It&#8217;s altogether possible I can recite it, and Adam&#8217;s art is spooktacularly creepy and great.
