I hope everyone had a lovely Thanksgiving with their loved ones. I didn’t have nine kinds of pie after all, but I did have some pumpkin pie and red wine and made sure to watch this<\/strong><\/a>, so all was good. <\/p>\n J. Patrick Lewis<\/strong><\/a> has stopped by on this Poetry Friday to share another<\/strong><\/a> poem from his forthcoming Countdown to Summer: A Poem for Every Day of the School Year<\/em>, to be published by Little, Brown next year. \nThat first Thanksgiving they would eat no ham,
\nNo mashed potato, sweet potato, yam,
\nFor lack of sugar, no cranberry sauce.
\nCorn on the cob would not have been around.
\nA pumpkin pie? Not even in their dreams.
\nAnd yet the bounty was a match, it seems,
\nFor this historic day on hallowed ground.
\nWild turkey, goose, duck, swan, partridge and crane,
\nCod, bass, herring, bluefish and eels released
\nUncommon bonds of gratitude. That feast
\nWould be their last. They never met again\u2014
\nThe Indians and Pilgrims\u2014to break bread.
\nBut that Thanksgiving Day they were well-fed.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
