His first illustrated title, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Fine-School-Sharon-Creech\/dp\/0060007281\/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&#038;s=books&#038;qid=1238601523&#038;sr=8-1\"><em><strong>A Fine, Fine School<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, written by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sharoncreech.com\/\"><strong>Sharon Creech<\/strong><\/a> and published by HarperCollins in 2001, became a <em>New York Times<\/em> bestseller, and he has gone on to illustrate many other best-selling titles, including the popular <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Diary-Worm-Doreen-Cronin\/dp\/006000150X\/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&#038;s=books&#038;qid=1238601627&#038;sr=1-3\"><em><strong>Diary of a Worm<\/strong><\/em><\/a> (2003), <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Diary-Spider-Doreen-Cronin\/dp\/0060001534\/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&#038;s=books&#038;qid=1238601627&#038;sr=1-2\"><em><strong>Diary of a Spider<\/strong><\/em><\/a> (2005), and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Diary-Fly-Doreen-Cronin\/dp\/0060001569\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&#038;s=books&#038;qid=1238601751&#038;sr=1-1\"><em><strong>Diary of a Fly<\/strong><\/em><\/a> (2007), all written by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.doreencronin.com\/doreen.html\"><strong>Doreen Cronin<\/strong><\/a>. His most recent illustrated title was last year&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Louise-Adventures-Chicken-Kate-Dicamillo\/dp\/0060755547\/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&#038;s=books&#038;qid=1238601839&#038;sr=1-2\"><em><strong>Louise, The Adventures of a Chicken<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, written by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.katedimcamillo.com\"><strong>Kate DiCamillo<\/strong><\/a>, the tale of an intrepid chicken, longing for adventure, who leaves her comfortable nest and goes to sea. Harry&#8217;s forthcoming title&#8212;as in, on shelves this month&#8212;is <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Luke-Loose-Books-Harry-Bliss\/dp\/1935179004\/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&#038;s=books&#038;qid=1238558158&#038;sr=8-1\"><strong>Luke on the Loose<\/strong><\/a><\/em>, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.toon-books.com\/\"><strong>TOON Book<\/strong><\/a> from Raw Junior, which Harry both wrote and illustrated.  <\/p>\n<p>But many people will also recognize Harry&#8217;s cartoon work: He is a cartoonist and cover artist for <em>The New Yorker<\/em>. In fact, his collection of <em>New Yorker<\/em> covers can be viewed at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.harrybliss.com\"><strong>his web site<\/strong><\/a>, as well as many cartoons and peeks into his illustrated children&#8217;s titles. Harry also signed on with Tribune Media Services to create a self-titled strip, featuring his single-panel gag cartoons, <em>Bliss<\/em>. (The <em>Los Angeles Times<\/em>, the <em>Boston Globe<\/em>, and the <em>Chicago Tribune<\/em> are a few of the newspapers which run it.) You can start wherever you\u2019d like when answering: getting initial ideas, starting to illustrate, or even what it\u2019s like under deadline, etc. Do you outline a great deal of the book before you illustrate or just let your muse lead you on and see where you end up?<\/font> <\/p>\n<p><strong><font size=4>Harry<\/font><\/strong>: I begin each book by breaking up the manuscript \u2013- placing the text where I feel it belongs. I work closely with the editor throughout this stage. Once the text in set, I begin very rough sketches to embellish the text and, essentially, tell the story in pictures. If I need reference, I get it. If I need inspiration, I find it. No joke, it\u2019s nasty. It\u2019s filled with old toys, a gazillion books, a TV, a computer, a practice drum set, photos of loved ones, stacks and stacks of art, and the walls are filled with original cartoon art from my heroes. Oh yeah, there are dust balls all over the place.<\/p>\n<p><font color=\"000066\"><font size=5>3.<\/font> <strong><font size=4>7-Imp<\/font><\/strong>: As book lovers, it interests us: What books or authors and\/or illustrators influenced you as an early reader?<\/font> <\/p>\n<p><font size=4><strong>Harry<\/strong><\/font><\/strong>: I grew up with a great appreciation for comics and \u2018high\u2019 art.
