It was first published in <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Love-Poems-Brian-Patten\/dp\/0586092056\/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&#038;s=books&#038;qid=1245375783&#038;sr=8-2\"><em>Love Poems<\/em><\/a><\/strong> (Flamingo\/HarperCollins, 1990) and intended for an adult readership, though Patten has written <a href=\"http:\/\/www.brianpatten.co.uk\/faqsfromchildren.html\"><strong>children&#8217;s poetry<\/strong><\/a> as well. <\/p>\n<p>I love this short, outstretched hand of a poem. I don&#8217;t want to go on too much about what it means to me, as I think a great deal of its appeal is its ability to invite the reader in, leaving room for many interpretations. I called it an outstretched hand, but it can also be a dare. An accusation. A wink. And so much more.
