His name is Chris Lance. Chris is not a full-time writer. He actually lives and works at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.austinzencenter.org\"><strong>Austin Zen Center<\/strong><\/a> and is about to undergo training in the priesthood. But I think when he does sit down and write, he creates some great stuff. I&#8217;ve read a bit of his earlier poems from years ago, and when he told me recently he&#8217;d written some new poetry, I suggested he share some on a Poetry Friday. I was pleased to hear he was up for it. <\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t want to sit here and analyze my friend&#8217;s poetry too much, but I will say this: I love how his poems strike out on such a clear and accessible note and then often surprise you. And I like how they can sometimes be so gentle and startling, all at once. I chose three to share today. Thanks and <em>mwah!<\/em> to Chris. Enjoy.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><center>* * * * * * *<\/center><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Abbot Told Me a Story&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The abbot told me<br \/>\na story the other day<br \/>\nabout two people he knew who<br \/>\nmet in the Tassajara kitchen<br \/>\nand how one fell in love<br \/>\nwith the other.<br \/>\nThe feelings weren\u2019t mutual<br \/>\nbut they went on to<br \/>\nbecome great friends.<\/p>\n<p>This morning I walked<br \/>\ninto the zendo and bowed,<br \/>\nand bowed again and<br \/>\nagain at my seat.<br \/>\nEvery time I face my cushions<br \/>\nI can see you across the room<br \/>\nand perhaps I\u2019m bowing to you now,<br \/>\nfor this opportunity,<br \/>\nfor the way that I\u2019ve softened,<br \/>\nand for however it is that<br \/>\nwe might show up together.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Kitchen Practice&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Tonight we gather<br \/>\nround a lamp-lit table<br \/>\nlaying out words and hearts,<br \/>\nwords and hearts that tell<br \/>\na particular story about<br \/>\nour lives together and,<br \/>\nhow tomorrow morning,<br \/>\nthat story continues as it has<br \/>\nevery other day this summer:<br \/>\nfrom dawn through dusk,<br \/>\nputting on our kitchen robes,<br \/>\nstirring awake the pulse of practice.<\/p>\n<p>Isn\u2019t it our delightful duty<br \/>\nto do such work, the cooking of life,<br \/>\nof our lives and all life so that both<br \/>\nthe difficult and delightful<br \/>\nbecome digestible?<br \/>\nMmmm\u2026delicious\u2026<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m holding my finger<br \/>\nagainst my lips and there\u2019s<br \/>\nno one around but us now and<br \/>\nI want to tell you a secret that everybody knows:<br \/>\nhow the complications of the human heart are unknotted by<br \/>\nkneading bread, frying onions, cleaning sinks;<br \/>\nhow our lives unfold into endless offering<br \/>\nand the wide world over cared for by<br \/>\nscrubbing carrots, paying attention,<br \/>\nby saying \u201cyes.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&#8220;Now We Have This&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I want to<br \/>\ntell you a story<br \/>\nthat explains it all,<br \/>\nabout how I fell<br \/>\nin love with someone<br \/>\nand realized what<br \/>\nI was really longing for<br \/>\nwas already here,<br \/>\nin the composite of me,<br \/>\nwaiting to be given.<\/p>\n<p>So I decided<br \/>\nI would walk through<br \/>\nthe world this way \u2013<br \/>\nyou know, with those<br \/>\nfull moon eyes<\/p>\n<p>and then you walked<br \/>\ninto this opening<\/p>\n<p>and now we have this.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><center>* * * * * * *<\/center><\/p>\n<p>The One and Only Andromeda will be hosting Poetry Friday this morning&#8212;well, <em>tomorrow<\/em> morning, as I&#8217;m posting this a bit early&#8212;over at <a href=\"http:\/\/awrungsponge.blogspot.com\/2009\/08\/poetry-friday-is-here-today.html\"><em><strong>a wrung sponge<\/strong><\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Image above of the seated zazen from <a href=\"http:\/\/shantam.wordpress.com\/2008\/06\/14\/zen\/\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I&#8217;m here to share some poems a friend of mine wrote a couple years ago.
