Goofy post title, I know, but I haven&#8217;t had coffee yet. Not to mention I just couldn&#8217;t make up my mind. Today&#8217;s featured poetry anthology includes haiku&#8212;not just traditional poetry&#8212;<em>and<\/em> I&#8217;m going to post <em>before<\/em> Poetry Friday begins, so there ya go. Hence, my funky post title is what I&#8217;m trying to say. Anyway. I never promised to be coherent. (Did I?)<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/jules\/OneBigRain 16-17_72a.jpg\"><br \/>\n<center><em>&#8220;Come with rain, O loud Southwester! \/ Bring the singer, bring the nester; \/<br \/>Give the buried flower a dream; \/ Make the settled snow-bank steam&#8230;&#8221;<\/em><\/center><\/p>\n<p>I love it when it rains. Really. I&#8217;m one of those chuckleheads who grins to herself when the forecast calls for days and days of it.<\/p>\n<p>In July of this year, Charlesbridge released a poetry anthology dedicated to such days, <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiebound.org\/book\/9781570917165\">One Big Rain: Poems for Rainy Days<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, compiled by Rita Gray and illustrated by <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/ryanorourke.com\/home.html\">Ryan O&#8217;Rourke<\/a><\/strong>, a title &#8220;well suited to a drizzly afternoon,&#8221; as <em>Publishers Weekly<\/em> wrote. <\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/jules\/onebigraincover.JPG\"><\/p>\n<p>Opening this post is an excerpt from <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Robert_Frost\">Robert Frost&#8217;s<\/a><\/strong> <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ketzle.com\/frost\/thawingw.htm\">&#8220;To the Thawing Wind.&#8221;<\/a><\/strong> Having organized the anthology by seasons (five poems for each)&#8212;and really and truly covering <em>many<\/em> forms of precipitation&#8212;Rita also includes some poems from <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carl_Sandburg\">Carl Sandburg<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eve_Merriam\">Eve Merriam<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/bio\/lilian-moore\">Lilian Moore<\/a><\/strong>, and many more, including a poem of her own: <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/jules\/OneBigRain_6-7_72a.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>As mentioned, there are many haikus, Gray even including a note in the beginning about the translations, as well as a brief description for child readers as to how haikus are written.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/jules\/OneBigRain_6-7_72-left.jpg\" border=1><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/jules\/OneBigRain 24-25_72a.jpg\" border=1><br \/>\n<center><em>Left side of spread &#8212; a haiku from Sod\u00f4: &#8220;a lone watermelon \/ knows nothing of the storm \/ this morning after&#8221;; Right side of spread: Eve Merriam&#8217;s &#8220;Summer Rain&#8221;:<br \/>&#8220;&#8230;Like a cinnamon \/ Geranium \/ Smells the rainingest rain.&#8221;<\/em><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Writes the <em>School Library Journal<\/em> review, &#8220;The short poems are distinctive and well chosen&#8230;The delightful oil-on-paper illustrations in muted colors wrap around the text and add whimsical details&#8230;This attractive collection offers a delightful introduction to nature poetry.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>Indeed. I like the artwork. Below are a few spot illustrations from the book. Enjoy. <\/p>\n<p>And stay dry.
