Now, what&#8217;s for dinner?&#8217; T\u00eda Isa just whistles as she steps over T\u00edo&#8217;s work boots&#8212;muddy like ogre shoes&#8212;and stirs our black-bean soup.&#8221;<\/em><\/center><\/p>\n<p>This morning at <em>Kirkus<\/em> I take a look at three new picture books created by folks who migrated from the world of editorial illustration to children&#8217;s book illustration &#8212; <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.followtheline.com\/\">Laura Ljungkvist<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.francisaviva.com\/\">Frank Viva<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stephensavage.net\/\">Stephen Savage<\/a><\/strong>. I&#8217;ll even throw in a villain laugh for you: MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA.)<\/p>\n<p><center>* * * * * * *<\/center><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kirkusreviews.com\/blog\/childrens\/seven-impossible-things-summer-fun\/\">Last week&#8217;s column<\/a><\/strong> was all about one of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ninacrews.com\/\">Nina Crews&#8217;s<\/a><\/strong> newest titles, <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiebound.org\/book\/9780061850639\">The Neighborhood Sing-Along<\/a><\/strong><\/em> (Greenwillow, May 2011), as well as the picture book debut from <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/megmedina.com\/\">Meg Medina<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiebound.org\/book\/9780763641566\">T\u00eda Isa Wants a Car<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (Candlewick, June 2011), illustrated by <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.claudiomunoz.com\/\">Claudio Mu\u00f1oz<\/a><\/strong>. Since I can&#8217;t write about picture books and NOT show you art (I just worded that sentence in a very complicated manner, didn&#8217;t I?), here are some spreads from each book today. <\/p>\n<p>The spreads from Nina&#8217;s book are re-posted from my Tuesday chat with her. She pulls out the only thing left in our envelope, which is skinny now like an empty balloon. It&#8217;s a picture of our whole family. Me, T\u00eda Isa, and T\u00edo Andr\u00e9s. But also my parents, grandparents, and cousins&#8212;<\/em>los padres, abuelos,<em> and<\/em> primos<em>&#8212;who are still there, thinking about us from that breezy house by the sea. I hold the picture steady<br \/>while she tapes down the corners.&#8221;<\/em><\/center><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/jules\/hulahoopwheel.jpg\" border=1><br \/>\n<center><em>&#8220;Then T\u00eda Isa leans into the Hula-hoop wheel, and off we go! My ponytail flaps behind me like a rope cut loose. We zoom along Sanford Avenue, past my school and the other buildings, so squat and red.
