{"id":2429,"date":"2012-09-20T00:01:47","date_gmt":"2012-09-20T06:01:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blaine.org\/sevenimpossiblethings\/?p=2429"},"modified":"2012-09-20T06:50:44","modified_gmt":"2012-09-20T12:50:44","slug":"judith-viorst-my-kirkus-q-a","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blaine.org\/sevenimpossiblethings\/?p=2429","title":{"rendered":"Judith Viorst: My <em>Kirkus<\/em> Q &#038; A"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/jules\/Alexander_and_the_terrible_horrible_no_good_very_bad_day.jpg\" border=1><br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\nThis morning over at <em>Kirkus<\/em>, I chat with author <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Judith_Viorst\">Judith Viorst<\/a><\/strong> about her very funny new chapter book for children, <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiebound.org\/book\/9781442435797\">Lulu Walks the Dogs<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, the follow-up to <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiebound.org\/book\/9781416999621\">Lulu and the Brontosaurus<\/a><\/strong><\/em>; the enduring popularity of <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alexander_and_the_Terrible,_Horrible,_No_Good,_Very_Bad_Day\">Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day<\/a><\/strong><\/em>; and her upcoming visit to Nashville&#8217;s <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.humanitiestennessee.org\/programs\/southern-festival-books\/events-children-and-young-adults\">Southern Festival of Books<\/a><\/strong> in October. When asked about her plan for the Festival, she said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>I&#8217;ll be reading from my second <em>Lulu<\/em> book, <em>Lulu Walks the Dogs<\/em>, and talking a bit about my vast admiration for writers like <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maurice_Sendak\">Sendak<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shel_Silverstein\">Silverstein<\/a><\/strong>, who appreciate and give voice to children&#8217;s non-sweetie-pie selves &#8212; to their wicked thoughts, wild dreams, and untamed feelings. I, too, like to write about fresh, fierce kids, who maybe, probably, bear some resemblance to my own three sons and seven grandchildren\u2014and to the little girl I once was.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>I really like that. <\/p>\n<p>The rest of the Q&#038;A is <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.kirkusreviews.com\/blog\/childrens\/judith-viorst-not-having-terrible-horrible-no-good\/\">here<\/a><\/strong> &#8212; and it includes (a tiny version of) <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/sevenimpossiblethings\/?p=1422\">Lane Smith&#8217;s<\/a><\/strong> wonderful illustration of Fleischman from the new <em>Lulu<\/em> book.
