She was one of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Molly_Shannon\">Molly Shannon&#8217;s<\/a><\/strong> best characters (in my <em>SNL<\/em>-fangirl opinion). Sally O&#8217;Malley is fifty years old, and she can still kick and stretch and shimmy and shake. And such. (You can see, briefly, some of her impressive moves <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=aiehDcVZ-vA\">here<\/a><\/strong>.) <!--more--><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/jules\/AB art Anniversary edition5a.jpg\">Sallly&#8217;s got nothing on <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Peggy_Parish\">Peggy Parish&#8217;s<\/a><\/strong> creation, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amelia_Bedelia\">Amelia Bedelia<\/a><\/strong>, who turns fifty herself this year. Amelia&#8217;s still putting clothes on the chicken, sketching the curtains, and&#8212;as Herman Parish, Peggy&#8217;s nephew who today is carrying on Amelia&#8217;s stories, said&#8212;still &#8220;baking her way out of difficult situations.&#8221; Amelia Bedelia debuted in Peggy&#8217;s 1963 picture book with the same name, illustrated by Austrian \u00e9migr\u00e9 Fritz Siebel. Last week at <em>Kirkus<\/em>, I wrote a bit about Amelia, as well as chatted briefly with Herman. That is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kirkusreviews.com\/features\/happy-50th-amelia-bedelia\/\">here<\/a><\/strong>, if you missed it last week and are so inclined to read. <\/p>\n<p>Today, I&#8217;ve got some images from the book &#8212; some of the original illustrations, as well as some images from early dummies of the book, whose art was pre-separated. These early images are part of the additional materials at the back of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Amelia-Bedelia-Fiftieth-Anniversary-Edition\/dp\/0062209698\">the 50th anniversary edition of the book<\/a><\/strong>, which Greenwillow just released in January.
