\nSelma G. Lanes once wrote, “If you would truly teach young children through the books they listen to or read themselves, give them a hero who is an unregenerately bad example, a rotter through and through.” At Kirkus<\/em> today, I’ve got some thoughts on this, partially prompted by a picture book from Japanese author\/illustrator Yoko Shima, who goes by Yokococo, called Matilda and Hans<\/em>. That link is here<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p>\n

Last week, I wrote here<\/a><\/strong> about three new sequels (of sorts) that won’t let you down. They include (as pictured above) Ole K\u00f6nnecke\u2019s<\/a><\/strong> Anton and the Battle<\/em><\/a><\/strong> (Gecko Press, January 2013); Bink & Gollie: Best Friends Forever<\/strong><\/a><\/em> by Kate DiCamillo<\/a><\/strong> and Alison McGhee<\/a><\/strong> and illustrated by Tony Fucile<\/a><\/strong> (Candlewick, April 2013); and Marilyn Singer\u2019s<\/a><\/strong> Follow Follow: A Book of Reverso Poems<\/a><\/strong><\/em> (Dial, February 2013), illustrated by Jos\u00e9e Masse<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p>\n

Marilyn<\/font><\/strong>: In the Fall, my collection of poems about our presidents, Rutherford B., Who Was He?<\/em>, illustrated by John Hendrix<\/a><\/strong>, will be published by Disney-Hyperion. <\/p>\n

I recently completed a book of poems about social dances—in the rhythms of the dances—and I’m currently working on a new book of reversos based on Greek myths, both for Dial\/Penguin. The myths will be illustrated by the amazing Jos\u00e9e Masse<\/a><\/strong>. I can’t wait to see what she does with them!<\/p>\n
