{"id":2582,"date":"2013-06-11T06:58:52","date_gmt":"2013-06-11T12:58:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blaine.org\/sevenimpossiblethings\/?p=2582"},"modified":"2013-06-11T06:58:52","modified_gmt":"2013-06-11T12:58:52","slug":"seven-questions-over-breakfast-with-zachariah-ohora","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blaine.org\/sevenimpossiblethings\/?p=2582","title":{"rendered":"Seven Questions Over Breakfast with Zachariah OHora"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/jules\/OskarChart.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/jules\/OskarChartsmall.jpg\" border=1><\/a><br \/>\n<center><em>How Zachariah OHora&#8217;s son inspired the character Nilson from his latest book<\/em><br \/>(Click to enlarge)<\/center><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/jules\/MeChart.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/jules\/MeChartsmall.jpg\" border=1><\/a><br \/>\n<center><em>No &#8230; wait just a second here &#8230;<\/em><br \/>(Click to enlarge)<\/center><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/jules\/tumblr_mnx99uQhz11rq6kfqo1_1280zzz.jpg\" style=\"float:right;\">This morning I&#8217;m making lots of room at the 7-Imp breakfast table for <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/zohora.com\/\">Zachariah OHora<\/a><\/strong> and Nilson (pictured above), the tantrum-throwing star of Zach&#8217;s latest book, <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiebound.org\/book\/9780803738522\">No Fits, Nilson!<\/a><\/strong><\/em> (Dial, June 2013), what <em>Kirkus<\/em> calls in <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kirkusreviews.com\/book-reviews\/zachariah-ohora\/no-fits-nilson\/\">their starred review<\/a><\/strong> an &#8220;amusing modern fable&#8221; and Pamela Paul at the <em>New York Times<\/em> <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/05\/12\/books\/review\/no-fits-nilson-by-zachariah-ohora-and-more.html?_r=0\">describes as<\/a><\/strong> a &#8220;charmingly original take on an evergreen concern.&#8221; It&#8217;s a tight squeeze here at the table, and he nearly throws a fit about it, but Nilson <em>just<\/em> manages to fit. Plus, I gave him a gorilla eye lock, and he calmed down. <\/p>\n<p>But it&#8217;s just Zach I&#8217;m going to chat with; Nilson&#8217;s busy eating some choco-banana ice cream. Zach says his breakfast-of-choice is a Dutch Baby. &#8220;Okay, that sounds weird,&#8221; he adds. &#8220;By &#8216;Dutch Baby,&#8217; I mean the pastry made of eggs, flour, and butter in a skillet. Not the human.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Zach&#8217;s debut picture book&#8212;<em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiebound.org\/book\/9780805090024\">Stop Snoring, Bernard!<\/a><\/strong><\/em>, which he both wrote and illustrated&#8212;up and won him the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.societyillustrators.org\/Awards-and-Competitions\/Original-Art\/Original-Art-Honorees\/2011-Original-Art-Winners.aspx\">Society of Illustrators&#8217; Founders Award<\/a><\/strong> (for new talent) in 2011. (That happened to be the year I juried for the Original Art award. The Original Art jury does not pick the recipient of the Founders Award, but I wholeheartedly cheered their choice that year anyway.)<\/p>\n<p>Zach saw two picture book releases this year, which you&#8217;ll read about below &#8212; one written by the talented <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lisawheelerbooks.com\/LW\/home.html\">Lisa Wheeler<\/a><\/strong>. (This is the one book of his I&#8217;ve yet to see, and I must remedy this.) I loved Zach&#8217;s art as soon as I met it, and I&#8217;m pleased he&#8217;s sharing lots of it today over coffee. In a little village called Narberth. It&#8217;s like <em>The Andy Griffith Show<\/em>. And I love them. I work out of my house, and probably like most illustrators, I&#8217;m a bit of a shut-in. It&#8217;s nice to go to schools and see the kids get excited about books and being creative. My presentations include video clips of otters holding hands, lots of drawing demos, and sometimes dancing and puppets. I&#8217;m working on a cardboard gorilla costume, so a kid or myself can act out a few of Nilson&#8217;s fits. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/jules\/3leggedbakermasterpiecea.jpg\" border=1><br \/>\n<center><em>&#8220;I did [this] when I was 4. I show it as an example that it&#8217;s okay to make mistakes. And uh \u2026 it&#8217;s a hot dog-cooking chef with three legs.&#8221;<\/em><\/center><\/p>\n<p><font color=\"000066\"><strong><font size=4>Jules<\/font><\/strong>: If you teach illustration, can you tell me how that influences your work as an illustrator?<\/font> <\/p>\n<p><strong><font size=4>Zachariah<\/font><\/strong>: I had the privilege to co-teach a class at <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.uarts.edu\/\">UArts<\/a><\/strong> in Philly this spring with <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/gregpizzoli.com\/\">Greg Pizzoli<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/sevenimpossiblethings\/?p=1790\">Matt Phelan<\/a><\/strong>. It was inspiring to see the students&#8217; work, and it helped me verbalize ideas that I have about the picture book-making process. It&#8217;s a hilarious story about a bunny family that adopts a baby wolf. I love Ame&#8217;s humor. She&#8217;s a great writer; plus, she has blue hair. <\/p>\n<p>And there&#8217;s another one she wrote that I signed on for. I can&#8217;t say what it is yet, but it&#8217;s horribly funny.   <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/jules\/PageImage-502436-3897145-momoteasea.jpg\"><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m working on another book with the brilliant team of Nancy Conescu and Lily Malcom at Dial, called <em>My Cousin Momo<\/em>. Momo is a flying squirrel, who visits his no-flying squirrel cousins and it&#8217;s pretty um \u2026nuts. I thank Zach again for visiting 7-Imp.<\/font> <\/p>\n<p><font color=\"000066\"><font size=5>1.<\/font> <strong><font size=4>Jules<\/font><\/strong>: What exactly is your process when you are illustrating a book? You can start wherever you\u2019d like when answering: getting initial ideas, starting to illustrate, or even what it\u2019s like under deadline, etc. Do you outline a great deal of the book before you illustrate or just let your muse lead you on and see where you end up?<\/font> <\/p>\n<p><strong><font size=4>Zachariah<\/font><\/strong>: It&#8217;s all about character for me. I usually make a silly card or something for my wife. Many of the jokes and action are visual, so I flesh them out to explain the text. Add a little occult or magic, and I&#8217;m hooked. The &#8220;Trick&#8221; series by <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scott_Corbett\">Scott Corbett<\/a><\/strong> I read over and over. <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Great_Brain\">The Great Brain<\/em> series<\/a><\/strong> (illustrated by <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mercer_Mayer\">Mercer Mayer<\/a><\/strong>).
