My contribution was a review of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/talesforallages.com\/\">Patricia Hruby Powell&#8217;s<\/a><\/strong> <em>Josephine: The Dazzling Life of Josephine Baker<\/em> (Chronicle Books, January 2014), illustrated by <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theartoffun.com\/\">Christian Robinson<\/a><\/strong>. What an excellent book this is. So, you can read all about it <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/bookpage.com\/features\/16108-little-boys-girls-join-hands#.UuSHqdLnaUk\">here<\/a><\/strong>, and today Christian, whose artwork gives me hope for the future of illustration, visits to share early cover designs, storyboards, and photos of some of his original art from the book. If not, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.90secondnewbery.com\/\">here&#8217;s<\/a><\/strong> all the information you need. It&#8217;s an annual video contest in which child filmmakers create movies that tell the stories of Newbery award-winning books in 90 seconds or less. Well, it&#8217;s time for the third annual festival, and in celebration, the founder of the entire endeavor, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/jameskennedy.com\/\">James Kennedy<\/a><\/strong>, is sharing this version of &#8220;Charlotte&#8217;s Web,&#8221; done by author-illustrator <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/sevenimpossiblethings\/?p=2610\">Aaron Zenz<\/a><\/strong> and his family. (Author-illustrator <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/philipstead.com\/\">Philip C. Stead<\/a><\/strong> and illustrator <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/sevenimpossiblethings\/?p=2296\">Erin Stead<\/a><\/strong> share their favorite books of the year.) I always look forward to this list, but this year there&#8217;s an added bonus essay from Phil Stead that has a Nashville theme. <\/p>\n<p><font size=4><strong>3)<\/strong><\/font> I really love what author Nicola Davies wrote <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/tomshooter.com\/nicola-davies.com\/blog\/?p=392\">here<\/a><\/strong>, which I read in preparation for <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kirkusreviews.com\/features\/connecting-our-world\/\">a Q&#038;A I did with her<\/a><\/strong> this week. <\/p>\n<p><font size=4><strong>4)<\/strong><\/font> My friend found these (circa early &#8217;50s) and shared them with me: <\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"420\" height=\"315\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/pRaymAb8AX8\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/center><\/p>\n<p>I say &#8220;these,&#8221; because there are more, as you can see <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=pRaymAb8AX8\">here<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>I think these are pretty much ridiculously wonderful. <\/p>\n<p><font size=4><strong>5)<\/strong><\/font> I just finished the second year of a two-year term as a member of the ALSC Grant Administration Committee for the American Library Association. As I&#8217;ve said before, it&#8217;s wonderful to read about so many creative librarians and their smart programming ideas. ALA has announced one of the winners, the recipient of the 2014 Maureen Hayes Award. <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.ala.org\/news\/press-releases\/2014\/01\/keene-public-library-awarded-2014-maureen-hayes-award\">See what the children at Keene Public Library in New Hampshire will be treated to?<\/a><\/strong> I mean, really. Librarians rock. <\/p>\n<p><font size=4><strong>6)<\/strong><\/font> Speaking of librarians, I&#8217;m unreasonably excited to hear the ALA awards tomorrow morning (and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kirkusreviews.com\/features\/ala-awards-happy-celebration-stories\/\">here&#8217;s<\/a><\/strong> why).
