It was also a big stone house, but it smelled different from ours, like old milk, and there was randomness in the way that everything was placed as though it had been dropped in haste wherever it was.<br \/>There was also a crucific on the living-room wall.<br \/>It was an object that was missing from our living room. &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><br \/>(Click to enlarge)<\/center><br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\nSince I chatted at <em>Kirkus<\/em> last week (<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kirkusreviews.com\/features\/finding-catharsis-art\/\">here<\/a><\/strong>) with author-illustrator and graphic designer <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/jamesmcmullan.com\/\">James McMullan<\/a><\/strong> about his new memoir, <em>Leaving China: An Artist Paints His World War II Childhood<\/em> (Algonquin, March 2014), I am following up today with two watercolors from the book. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/jules\/15200_14.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/jules\/15200_14small.jpg\" border=1><\/a><br \/>\n<center><em>&#8220;&#8230; The stories [my father] wrote were filled with inside jokes about Cheefoo life and personalities, and he stole unashamedly in much of his music from the tunes of popular songs.
