That&#8217;s a 7-Imp first. <\/p>\n<p>Over at <em>BookPage<\/em>, my review of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/sevenimpossiblethings\/?p=1392\">Sophie Blackall&#8217;s<\/a><\/strong> <em>The Baby Tree<\/em> (Nancy Paulsen Books, May 2014) has been posted. The review is <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/bookpage.com\/reviews\/16553-sophie-blackall-baby-tree#.U2g_3oFdVuI\">here<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p>I follow up today with a visit from Sophie and some art from the book. <\/p>\n<p>Enjoy. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p><center><strong><font size=3>* * *<\/font><\/strong><\/center><\/p>\n<p><strong><font size=4>Sophie<\/font><\/strong>: This is a page from my sketchbook where I first scribbled thumbnails for the layout of <em>The Baby Tree<\/em>. I remember I was on the subway and it was crowded, and I was balancing the book on my lap with my elbows tucked right in. And for some reason I was able to get pretty much the whole thing down, something which had been eluding me in all the previous hours at my desk.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/jules\/layout.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/jules\/layoutsmall.jpeg\" border=1><\/a><br \/>\n<center><em>(Click to enlarge)<\/em><\/center><br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\nThis was the tiny squiggle &#8230;<br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/jules\/hospitalthumbnailuse.jpeg\" border=1><br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\n&#8230; which would grow into this sketch &#8230;<br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/jules\/18-19.jpeg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/jules\/18-19small.jpeg\" border=1><\/a><br \/>\n<center><em>(Click to enlarge)<\/em><\/center><br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\n&#8230; which changed a bit in the final painting below. I borrowed the white space from one of my favorite books, <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Tiger_Who_Came_to_Tea\">The Tiger Who Came To Tea<\/a><\/strong><\/em> by <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/sevenimpossiblethings\/?p=1891\">Judith Kerr<\/a><\/strong> &#8230;<br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/jules\/tigercametotea.JPG\"><br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\n&#8230; and patterns and lines from <em>Koganemaru the Dog<\/em> by the Japanese illustrator Shotaro Honda:<br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/payload45.cargocollective.com\/1\/2\/88505\/3211406\/08_Shotaro_Honda_Round-Beetle-Classic-Fairy-Tales-1951_900.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/jules\/08_Shotaro_Honda_Round-Beetle-Classic-Fairy-Tales-1951_900use.jpg\" border=1><\/a><br \/>\n<center><em>(Click to see larger version)<\/em><\/center><br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\nAnd I built my palette around the colors in this 18th century Indian painting I saw at the Met, possibly by Mir Kalan Khan.
