{"id":3420,"date":"2014-06-03T00:01:40","date_gmt":"2014-06-03T06:01:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blaine.org\/sevenimpossiblethings\/?p=3420"},"modified":"2014-06-02T22:34:44","modified_gmt":"2014-06-03T04:34:44","slug":"the-pilot-and-the-little-prince","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blaine.org\/sevenimpossiblethings\/?p=3420","title":{"rendered":"<em>The Pilot and the Little Prince<\/em>"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/jules\/PilotAndPrince_04asmall.jpg\"><br \/>\n<center><em>&#8220;Long ago in France, at the turn of the last century,<br \/>a little boy was born to be an adventurer.&#8221;<\/em><\/center><br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\nI&#8217;ve seen a small handful of picture books thus far here in 2014 that I think are truly exceptional, and today&#8217;s featured picture book is one of those. <\/p>\n<p>I reviewed <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.petersis.com\/\">Peter S\u00eds&#8217;<\/a><\/strong> newest book, <em>The Pilot and the Little Prince: The Life of Antoine de Saint-Exup\u00e9ry<\/em> (Farrar Straus Giroux, May 2014), over at <em>BookPage<\/em>. That review is <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/bookpage.com\/reviews\/16621-peter-sis-pilot-little-prince#.U41BVXJdVuI\">here<\/a><\/strong>, and today I&#8217;m following up with some art from the book. <\/p>\n<p>Enjoy. <\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/jules\/PilotAndPrince_14.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/jules\/PilotAndPrince_14small.jpg\" border=1><\/a><br \/>\n<center><em>&#8220;Eventually, Antoine returned to France. He got married. The airline he helped build went out of business, so he looked for new opportunities in life. He had become a famous pilot and a celebrated writer. Through it all he continued to fly&#8212;<br \/>for work, pleasure, and adventure.&#8221;<\/em><br \/>(Click to enlarge and see in more detail)<\/center><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/jules\/PilotAndPrince_17.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/jules\/PilotAndPrince_17small.jpg\" border=1><\/a><br \/>\n<center><em>&#8220;From the skies, Antoine watched the fires, smoke, and destruction the Germans left in their wake as they swooped down from the north. They invaded France on May 10, 1940, and the country fell in just thirty-eight days. Antoine&#8217;s unite was ordered to North Africa and his service was over. Back in France he realized he could not live under German occupation. He fled to Lisbon to board a ship for New York and learned that his friend Guillaumet had been shot down. As Antoine sailed across the ocean under the night sky he knew he had lost his friend and his country.&#8221;<\/em><br \/>(Click to enlarge and see in more detail)<\/center><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/jules\/PilotAndPrince_22.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/jules\/PilotAndPrince_22small.jpg\" border=1><\/a><br \/>\n<center><em>&#8220;Antoine joined his old squadron in North Africa. He asked for flights that would send him over France, where his family was living. On July 31, 1944, at 8:45 a.m.,<br \/>he took off from Borgo, Corsica, to photograph enemy positions east of Lyon.<br \/>It was a beautiful day.
