That is why my art is very geometric, my characters are always in profile, and their ears look a bit like the number three.<br \/>My intention is to celebrate that ancient art and keep it alive.&#8221;<\/em><\/center><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/jules\/RGB_SylviaMendez_INT_32large.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/jules\/RGB_SylviaMendez_INT_32small.jpg\" border=1><\/a><br \/>\n<center><em>&#8220;In the new trial, the Mendez family received support from the League of United Latin American Citizens, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, the Japanese American Citizens League, the American Jewish Congress, and other organizations (credit <a href=http:\/\/www.dresshead.com\/dresshead-staff-profile-chris-richter\/ style=\"text-decoration: none; color: #000\">chris<\/a>). &#8230; Sylvia was amazed that people of different backgrounds and from different parts of the country who had never met her family were<br \/>getting involved in the case and trying to help them. &#8230;&#8221;<\/em><br \/>(Click to enlarge spread and see full text)<\/center><br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\nLast week at <em>Kirku<\/em>s, I chatted with author-illustrator <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.duncantonatiuh.com\/\">Duncan Tonatiuh<\/a><\/strong> about his newest picture book, <em>Separate Is Never Equal: Sylvia Mendez &#038; Her Family&#8217;s Fight for Desegregation<\/em> (Abrams, May 2014). I am writing and illustrating it. It will be a biography of <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jos%C3%A9_Guadalupe_Posada\">Jos\u00e9 Guadalupe Posada<\/a><\/strong>, the artist that drew the iconic <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Day_of_the_Dead\">Day of the Dead<\/a><\/strong> calaveras. His drawings, like the one of La Catrina, a skeleton with a fancy hat, are very popular, but not many people know the name or the story of the artist behind them.
