Last week over at <em>Kirkus<\/em>, I had fairy tales on the mind (that is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kirkusreviews.com\/features\/grimm-holiday\/\">here<\/a><\/strong>, if you&#8217;re so inclined to read it), and so today I&#8217;m following up that column with art from the books I wrote about. When you&#8217;re a freelance writer, you trade a tremendously flexible schedule during the entire year (for which I&#8217;m grateful) for still having to work some during the holidays. But on Christmas Day? I just don&#8217;t even bother to turn on my computer. It&#8217;s a beautiful thing. <\/p>\n<p><font size=4><strong>2)<\/strong><\/font> <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.maxrichtermusic.com\/en\/index.php\">Max Richter<\/a><\/strong>.  <\/p>\n<p><font size=4><strong>3)<\/strong><\/font> <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/sevenimpossiblethings\/?p=3939\">I mentioned previously<\/a><\/strong> how much my girls and I enjoyed Katherine Rundell&#8217;s <em>The Wolf Wilder<\/em> (which I ended up writing about <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kirkusreviews.com\/features\/book-youll-howl\/\">here<\/a><\/strong>). Now we&#8217;re reading <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiebound.org\/book\/9781442490611\">Cartwheeling in Thunderstorms<\/a><\/strong><\/em> (which received the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.hbook.com\/2015\/05\/news\/boston-globe-horn-book-awards\/2015-boston-globe-horn-book-awards-for-excellence-in-childrens-literature\/\">2015 Boston Globe-Horn Book Award<\/a><\/strong> in the category of Fiction), and DANG, it is just as good. It&#8217;s such a lovely thing to discover a new favorite writer.<br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/7pics\/2015\/12\/cartwheelingcover.jpg\"><br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\n<font size=4><strong>4)<\/strong><\/font> Showing <em>The Lord of the Rings<\/em> trilogy (the films) to our daughters over Christmas break. There was <em>much<\/em> discussion about this, since the youngest hasn&#8217;t read the books yet&#8212;I guess, without realizing it till now, we all pretty much land on the side of reading-the-book-first&#8212;but we just went ahead. (Actually, I&#8217;ve never read those books, but I digress.) <\/p>\n<p><font size=4><strong>4\u00bd)<\/strong><\/font> There&#8217;s a moment in the films I&#8217;d forgotten where Legolas SWINGS HIS WAY UP ONTO A HORSE, during battle. Here. I just found it online:<br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/WpegFVRxarI\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\nI mean, RIGHT??!<\/p>\n<p><font size=4><strong>5)<\/strong><\/font> Really animated discussions about whom you&#8217;d be willing to carry into <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mount_Doom\">Mount Doom<\/a><\/strong> (as Samwise carried Frodo). <\/p>\n<p><font size=4><strong>6)<\/strong><\/font> This was my daughter&#8217;s Christmas gift, because <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ada_Lovelace\">Ada Lovelace<\/a><\/strong> is her namesake (sort of &#8212; halfway), but I&#8217;m reading it too, and &#8230; well, where do I even begin? It&#8217;s <em>thoroughly<\/em> entertaining in many directions:<br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/7pics\/2015\/12\/lovelace.jpg\" border=1><br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><\/p>\n<p><font size=4><strong>6\u00bd)<\/strong><\/font> I can&#8217;t remember if I&#8217;ve mentioned yet how wonderful <em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Over_the_Garden_Wall_(miniseries)\">Over the Garden Wall<\/a><\/strong><\/em> is.
