(He&#8217;s done that <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/sevenimpossiblethings\/?p=3730\">at least once before<\/a><\/strong>.)<\/p>\n<p>Today, he visits to talk about creating the artwork for <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sherririnker.com\/\">Sherri Duskey Rinker&#8217;s<\/a><\/strong> <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiebound.org\/book\/9781452152165\">Mighty, Mighty Construction Site<\/a><\/em><\/strong>, released earlier this year. This is the sequel to 2011&#8217;s <strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.indiebound.org\/book\/9780811877824\">Goodnight, Goodnight, Construction Site<\/a><\/em><\/strong> (which has <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.slj.com\/afuse8production\/2016\/11\/16\/the-slush-pile-myth\/#_\">a great publication story<\/a><\/strong>). Bonafide bestsellers these books are. And this follow-up, which introduces some new characters, delivers the goods. Best of all in this new story, Skid Steer and Mighty Flatbed are explicitly <em>she<\/em> machines. Attagirls!<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s get right to it so that Tom can do his thing. We just had to decide what the guy in the building would be yelling to wake up all the sleeping trucks.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/7pics\/2017\/04\/Newcrew2002use.jpg\"><br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\nSherri came up the idea of a new crew of trucks that would come in and help the five trucks from the original story, which gave us two essentials: action and a theme &#8212; cooperation. In this early version [above], the story ended with all the trucks finishing their work and staying together for a sleepover.<br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/7pics\/2017\/04\/MMCSpagination.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/7pics\/2017\/04\/MMCSpaginationsmall.jpg\" border=1><\/a><br \/>\n<center><em>(Click to enlarge)<\/em><\/center><br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\nWith the basic elements in mind, we created a pagination to figure out the flow. Creating a set-up, closing, and five different truck scenarios within 40 pages was a challenge &#8212; but a fun challenge.<br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/7pics\/2017\/04\/NewCrewStretchlarge.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/7pics\/2017\/04\/NewCrewStretchsmall.jpg\" border=1><\/a><br \/>\n<center><em>(Click to enlarge)<\/em><\/center><br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\nThe first book gave us lots of elements to reprise and develop in the sequel. (Still not sure I got it right.)<br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/7pics\/2017\/04\/Pumper.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/7pics\/2017\/04\/Pumpersmall.jpg\" border=1><\/a><br \/>\n<center><em>(Click to enlarge)<\/em><\/center><br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\nOld trucks have beautiful, human-like shapes, so they\u2019re much better reference than newer trucks.<br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\n[Below] is a progression of black-and-white art for one spread. This is the point in the story where the new trucks enter to help with a big construction project.
