{"id":457,"date":"2007-01-26T00:01:15","date_gmt":"2007-01-26T05:01:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blaine.org\/sevenimpossiblethings\/?p=457"},"modified":"2007-01-26T21:10:29","modified_gmt":"2007-01-27T02:10:29","slug":"poetry-friday-seriously-i-need-some-snow-already","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/blaine.org\/sevenimpossiblethings\/?p=457","title":{"rendered":"Poetry Friday:  Seriously, I Need Some Snow Already."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>{Note: Head <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/chickenspaghetti.typepad.com\/chicken_spaghetti\/2007\/01\/poetry_friday_r.html#comment-28318718\">here<\/a><\/strong> at Chicken Spaghetti for this week&#8217;s Poetry Friday round-up} . . .<\/em> <\/p>\n<p>Winter has finally come to Massachusetts.\u00a0 Sort of.\u00a0 We&#8217;re finished with that weird,\u00a0wrong, lingering balminess that made Christmas seem more surreal than festive.\u00a0 It&#8217;s really really really cold out there now.\u00a0 There&#8217;s what <a href=\"http:\/\/www.davidfosterwallace.com\"><strong>David Foster Wallace<\/strong><\/a> called a <a href=\"http:\/\/search.barnesandnoble.com\/booksearch\/isbninquiry.asp?ean=9780316925280&#038;displayonly=CHP&#038;z=y\"><strong>&#8220;true, religious-type wind&#8221;<\/strong><\/a> blowing around.\u00a0 But.\u00a0\u00a0January is almost over, and we haven&#8217;t even had a single inch of snow.\u00a0 Not one.\u00a0 A couple of flurries &#8211; that&#8217;s it.<\/p>\n<p>I moved up here for snow.\u00a0\u00a0What the hell?\u00a0 Is it really just El Nino, or is this\u00a0global warming?\u00a0 Have I seen the last of the serious,\u00a0two-foot New England blizzards?\u00a0 Do I have to move to\u00a0Saskatchewan?  What is the point of single-digit temperatures with you-don&#8217;t-even-wanna-know wind chill factors if there&#8217;s NO SNOW?<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, here&#8217;s a bit from a poem that pretty much sums up the weirdness:  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.poets.org\/viewmedia.php\/prmMID\/15465\"><strong>&#8220;A Winter Without Snow&#8221;<\/strong><\/a> by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.poets.org\/poet.php\/prmPID\/242\"><strong>J.D. McClatchy<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>For Emerson, a century ago and farther north,<br \/>\nWhere the country has an ode&#8217;s jagged edges,<br \/>\nIt was &#8220;frolic architecture.&#8221;  Frozen blue-<\/p>\n<p>Print of extravagance, shapes of a shared life<br \/>\nLeft knee-deep in transcendental drifts:<br \/>\nThe isolate forms of snow are its hardest fact.<\/p>\n<p>Down here, the plain tercets of provision do,<br \/>\nTheir picket snow-fence peeling, gritty,<br \/>\nHolding nothing back, nothing in, nothing at all.<\/p>\n<p>Down here, we&#8217;ve come to prefer the raw material<br \/>\nOf everyday and this year have kept an eye<br \/>\nOn it, shriveling but still recognizable&#8211;<\/p>\n<p>A sight that disappoints even as it adds<br \/>\nA clearing second guess to winter.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>You can read the rest <a href=\"http:\/\/www.poets.org\/viewmedia.php\/prmMID\/15465\"><strong>here<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>{Note: Head here at Chicken Spaghetti for this week&#8217;s Poetry Friday round-up} . . .
