Today&#8217;s artist, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sallygardner.com\/projects\">Sally Gardner<\/a><\/strong>, isn&#8217;t quite <em>brand<\/em>-new, but I&#8217;m showcasing her art this morning anyway. She is a working freelance illustrator and graphic designer, and she both illustrated and co-created the <em><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/splurch.julieberrybooks.com\/\">Splurch Academy for Disruptive Boys<\/a><\/strong><\/em> series \u2014 a hybrid graphic novel and early chapter book series, published by Penguin Books for Young Readers. <\/p>\n<p>Sally was once a student of author-illustrator <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/sevenimpossiblethings\/?p=1468\">Sergio Ruzzier&#8217;s<\/a><\/strong>. (Years ago, she took one of his continuing education classes at the <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sva.edu\/\">School of Visual Arts<\/a><\/strong>.) She lives in New York. She not only shares some art today but also tells us a bit more about her work. I thank her for sharing. <\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s get to it. &#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><center>* * *<\/center><\/p>\n<p><strong><font size=4>Sally<\/font><\/strong>: Ever since I can remember, I\u2019ve loved illustrated books. As a child, I spent more time looking at the art in books than I spent reading them. I can still remember how many of my books smelled.<br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/7pics\/2018\/10\/chungo_on_bike.jpg\"><br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\nMy favorite illustrators are <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Edward_Ardizzone\">Edward Ardizzone<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.quentinblake.com\/\">Quentin Blake<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ronald_Searle\">Ronald Searle<\/a><\/strong>. I love their drawings for being funny and scratchy and no more complicated than they need to be.<br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/7pics\/2018\/10\/kinguse.jpg\"><br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\nI spend most of my time working at a computer, but I\u2019m happiest when I\u2019m surreptitiously drawing people on the subway. Even when I am making illustrations with a computer, I still start each drawing with pencil and paper.<br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/7pics\/2018\/10\/chungo_dummy_may07_final_Page_17use.jpg\"><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/7pics\/2018\/10\/chungo_dummy_may07_final_Page_04large.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/7pics\/2018\/10\/chungo_dummy_may07_final_Page_04small.jpg\" border=1><\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/7pics\/2018\/10\/chungo_dummy_may07_final_Page_13large.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/7pics\/2018\/10\/chungo_dummy_may07_final_Page_13small.jpg\" border=1><\/a><br \/>\n<center><em>(Click bottom two images to enlarge)<\/em><\/center><br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\nI still learn things from Sergio. All illustrations have a job or two to do, but some drawings also manage to be poetry. That is the stuff of Sergio\u2019s work, and studying with him taught me to watch for drawings that begin to lift off the page.<br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/7pics\/2018\/10\/kitty_litter_3use.jpg\"><br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\nIn <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/sallyfayegardner.com\/\">the corporate work that I do<\/a><\/strong> <em>[below is a logo]<\/em>, I have to visually represent business concepts in a way that\u2019s easy to understand. You can read more about it <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/5414486\/christine-blasey-ford-time-cover\/\">here<\/a><\/strong>.<br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/7pics\/2018\/10\/timecover.jpg\" border=1><br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\n<font size=4><strong>2)<\/strong><\/font> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/motherboard.vice.com\/en_us\/article\/pa9mmk\/8-year-old-girl-pulls-ancient-viking-sword-from-lake-is-our-ruler-now\">This 8-year-old Swedish girl!<\/a><\/strong> (&#8220;Daddy, I found a sword!&#8221;) <\/p>\n<p><font size=4><strong>3)<\/strong><\/font> A kind and considerate note from a beginning illustrator once featured here on a Sunday. <\/p>\n<p><font size=4><strong>4)<\/strong><\/font> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/samphillips.com\/\">Sam Phillips&#8217;<\/a><\/strong> new album was released last week, which would have been in my kicks if I&#8217;d had seven separate kicks. It is called <em>World on Sticks<\/em>, and it is incredible. I don&#8217;t use the word masterpiece often, but I&#8217;m tellin&#8217; you &#8230; this one is incredible. I&#8217;ve been such a big fan for over 30 years now. I saw an interview recently with Conor O&#8217;Brien (of Villagers) talking about how he feels spoiled that Radiohead (one of his favorite bands) exists in this world. My favorite was our tour of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/hatchshowprint.com\/\">Hatch Show Print&#8217;s design shop<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p><font size=4><strong>6)<\/strong><\/font> But we also toured <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ryman.com\/tours\/\">the Ryman<\/a><\/strong>, something I&#8217;ve always wanted to do. <\/p>\n<p><font size=4><strong>7)<\/strong><\/font> I love how, in <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blogs.slj.com\/afuse8production\/2018\/10\/05\/censoring-the-unsaid-or-damned-if-you-do-if-you-dont\/\">this post<\/a><\/strong> at Betsy Bird&#8217;s site, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/sevenimpossiblethings\/?p=3631\">Nick Bruel<\/a><\/strong> wrote: &#8220;How dull our literature would be if we weren\u2019t exposed to those things that bewilder us, perplex us, and possibly even offend us.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><font size=4><strong>Bonus #1:<\/strong><\/font> <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.candlewick.com\/cat.asp?mode=book&#038;isbn=1536203645&#038;browse=Author\">The book I wrote four years ago<\/a><\/strong> with Betsy Bird and Peter Sieruta is now out in paperback.
