He didn&#8217;t feel even a little bit bad about that.&#8221;<\/em><\/center><br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\nOver at <em>Kirkus<\/em> today, I&#8217;ve got two new picture books that pay tribute to unsung heroes. <\/p>\n<p>That is <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kirkusreviews.com\/features\/unsung-heroes\/\">here<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p>\n<p><center>* * *<\/center><\/p>\n<p>Last week, I wrote <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kirkusreviews.com\/features\/nature-beast\/\">here<\/a><\/strong> about <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/laurelsnyder.com\/\">Laurel Snyder&#8217;s<\/a><\/strong> <em>Hungry Jim<\/em> (Chronicle, September 2019), illustrated by <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/sevenimpossiblethings\/?p=3608\">Chuck Groenink<\/a><\/strong>. Today, I&#8217;ve got some art from the book, and Chuck also visits to share some process images. <\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n<center>* * *<\/center><br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\n<strong><font size=4>Chuck<\/font><\/strong>: [Below are] some sketches from the very first round of sketches. This was one of the trickiest parts of the book, deciding what to show and how to get the bear out of him. We decided he shouldn&#8217;t turn back into a boy until after he&#8217;s blarped out the bear.<br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/7pics\/2019\/08\/hjprelim9large.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/7pics\/2019\/08\/hjprelim9small.jpg\" border=1><\/a><br \/>\n<center><em>(Click to enlarge)<\/em><\/center><br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\nThis is one of the many sketches for the jacket, this one a very deliberate homage to Sendak&#8217;s <em>Pierre<\/em>.<br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/7pics\/2019\/08\/hjprelimcoverlarge.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blaine.org\/7pics\/2019\/08\/hjprelimcoversmall.jpg\" border=1><\/a><br \/>\n<center><em>(Click to enlarge)<\/em><\/center><br \/>\n<BR>&nbsp;<BR><br \/>\nIt took me a while to find the right approach for drawing the book. At one point I felt I was going in the wrong direction and tried out something else.
