\"PoemsA couple of weeks ago Nancy at Journey Woman<\/a><\/strong> shared the amazing poem “Love Song: I and Thou”<\/a><\/strong> for PF, and I fell deeply in love.\u00a0 Somehow I’ve gone my whole life without ever hearing of Alan Dugan<\/a><\/strong>, and I set about to rectify that.\u00a0 I checked out Poems Seven<\/a><\/strong> today, and after an hour of flipping around in it at random, I can’t understand how I ever lived without him.\u00a0 What amazes me is how he’s able to create these incredibly potent images with such a direct and understated style.\u00a0 No florid vocabulary, no theatrics, just pure hard poetry, as bracing and beautiful as standing on a rocky New England beach in the middle of winter.\u00a0 Thank you, Nancy.<\/p>\n

Here’s a bit of another new favorite poem, “Against a Sickness: To the Female Double Principle God.”<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n

She said: \u201cI\u2019m god and all<\/div>\n
of this and that world and love<\/div>\n
garbage and slaughter all the time<\/div>\n
and spring once a year. Once a year<\/div>\n
I like to love. You can adjust<\/div>\n
to the discipline or not,<\/div>\n
and your sacrificial act<\/div>\n
called \u2018Fruitfulness in Decay\u2019<\/div>\n
would be pleasing to me<\/div>\n
as long as you did it with joy.<\/div>\n
Otherwise, the prayer \u2018Decay,<\/div>\n
Ripe in the Fruitfulness\u2019<\/div>\n
will do if you have to despair.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n
