Really, that’s a top-fiver for me.

Did you see yesterday’s features? I wish I had time to point out some highlights from all of them, as I enjoyed reading each one. Colleen Mondor, who featured Carin Berger, shared a moving personal story about her own experiences with The Jimmy Fund. Brian Lies momentarily broke my heart with this story, which is a good reminder of the power of our words to children. At her feature of Brian and his snowflake, Barbara O’Connor asked, “What are some of your earliest memories of creating art?” (love that question), and he responded:

I think my earliest memory is from preschool, making papier mache-covered balloon animals. I got in trouble because I was more interested in mooshing my hands around in the flour paste than actually finishing my project.

Another time, in first grade, we did line drawings on burlap and then embroidered the lines with blunt needles. My drawing was of a lion and a tree and I was proud of it, until the art teacher picked out some of my stitching and “fixed” it. There was a rule against drawing “lollipop trees,” which was sad because that’s how little kids see a tree–a stick and a blob on top of it. She hung my lion in the hallway and told me how nice it was, but I couldn’t even look at it–it wasn’t mine any more.

And you really want to meet Shanté, as featured by Susan at Chicken Spaghetti!

Thanks to each and every participating blogger for these snowflake/illustrator features.

As I say every single day in case you’ve missed it, don’t forget this new page here at 7-Imp, updated daily, which lists all the illustrator features thus far in one spot, and it’s turning into a handy-dandy, way-cool illustrator resource for us Picture Book Nerds.

* * * * * * *

* In case this is the first time you’re reading about the Blogging for a Cure effort, the illustrators and snowflakes that participating bloggers are featuring are only the ones that the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute had ready to go when this multi-blog event was organized.
