7-Imp’s 7 Kicks #652: Featuring
My Chapter 16 Q&A with Derrick Barnes

h1 August 25th, 2019 by jules

This past week, Tennessee’s Chapter 16 posted a Q&A I did with author Derrick Barnes, who will be at Nashville’s Southern Festival of Books this October. He talks to me about his newest picture book — The King of Kindergarten (Nancy Paulsen Books, July 2019), illustrated by Vanessa Brantley-Newton — as well as the success of last year’s award-winning Crown. You can click on the image above to head to our chat.

Note for any new readers: 7-Imp’s 7 Kicks is a weekly meeting ground for taking some time to reflect on Seven(ish) Exceptionally Fabulous, Beautiful, Interesting, Hilarious, or Otherwise Positive Noteworthy Things from the past week, whether book-related or not, that happened to you. New kickers are always welcome.

* * * Jules’ Kicks * * *

1) This kick is a couple weeks old (but I haven’t done seven separate kicks in a while)…

I don’t know if you all saw this shirt going around on Twitter:

This was Lucy Knisley’s response below. I love it. (She’s actually selling these now.)

2) Getting all of Lucy’s books from our library. (I had only read her newest one.) My daughters and I have been passing them around. I hope she writes about every stage of her life. I’d read ’em.

3) Stumbling on this video of Nicole Atkins singing in the wild. THAT VOICE. Also, that is a great song. (p.s. When I was at the Tennessee Renaissance Festival this summer, I saw her — that’s Nashville for you — and introduced myself and told her she has one of the world’s most amazing voices.)

4) M. T. Anderson’s 2019 Margaret A. Edwards Award speech.

5) This poem from Naomi Shihab Nye. (I apologize if I’ve shared it recently and am being redundant.)

6) This tweet made me laugh. I don’t know this kid, but I like him already.

7) My thoughtful friends, including one who sent me a bakery gift (yum) and another who drove a long distance to visit with delicious gifts. This is really the best kick of all: My considerate friends. I’m lucky.

What are YOUR kicks this week?

  1. Good morning, Imps!

Jules: Music is so helpful. It can lift your mood, change it, reinforce it – so many things.

    My kicks this week:
    1) Care
    2) Calm
    3) Patience
    4) Space
    5) Walk
    6) Ease
    7) Safe

  2. Happy Sunday Imps!

Jules – that first day of kindergarten is such a big day. Thanks for sharing Lucy Knisley’s response to that shirt/meme – just bought one of her books for my niece! your week full of music, poetry and friends sounds lovely.

Little Willow – your kicks are very soothing this week, I especially like the pairings of 1 and 2 and 3,4, and 5.

    My kicks this week:
    1) Tanya Tucker’s new album, While I’m Livin’ which was produced by Brandi Carlile and Shooter Jennings. Its so good.
    2) Tanya Tucker’s cover of Miranda Lambert’s “The House That Made Me”. The original is great, and the cover is different and also great, very haunting, especially with the added layer of TT’s personal history.
    3) Made it through another very busy week of work.
    4) Finding out Katherine Rundell is on Instagram, then going through all her photos because I think she is awesome.
    5) This new interview with her where she takes the interviewer with her to a trapeze class/lesson:

    6) Twitter can be nuts, but sometimes it brings the funny – this tweet about Rob Lowe’s son teasing him (trolling him?) had me cracking up: https://twitter.com/zenpeacekeeper/status/1164231010197753857
    7) Daisy has taken over the new papasan chair I bought and turns out she and my roommate rush to be the first one in it every morning.
7.5) Daisy continues to be the silliest, snuggliest, sometimes naughty dog.
BONUS: Two of the neighborhood feral kitties have started letting me pet them a little, and purr like crazy, before remembering they are supposed to be afraid of me and skittering away again.

Have a great last week of summer everyone!

  3. HELLO! Sorry for my belated reply!

Little Willow: You’re one of my favorite people to share music with.

Rachel: Which book did you get? I’m reading the one on marriage now. Soooooo good. Also: KITTIES! Thanks for all the links, too. I’ve heard some of the Tanya Tucker stuff. So good. As a Nashvillian, I give a thumbs-up!

have a good week, you two!

  4. Also, I’m snort-laughing at those Lowe tweets.

Unfortunately, I can’t link to the Rundell one. Wah!
