7-Imp’s 7 Kicks #667: Featuring Julie Paschkis

This is actually week #666 of kicking, dear kickers, but (call me crazy) I couldn’t bring myself to assign such a grouchy number to this inviting image by author-illustrator Julie Paschkis. So, I muddled with the math.
This image is an oldie but goodie from Paschkis, and I figured it was a fitting one to share this week. Also, while we’re on Paschkis, I was very happy to discover that her 2020 Vision Calendar is now on sale. And I’m going to evangelize this for a moment:
Paschkis started creating these beautiful, one-page posters after Trump’s election. I love supporting this and forking out the cash for them (though, sadly, I completely blanked on 2019’s calendar, and it sold out before I remembered it), because all of the proceeds from the sale of these goes to the ACLU. As she writes at her site, “The watercolor and ink drawing celebrates the hope that our democracy will be strengthened and the rights of all protected — that 2020 will be a year of clarity and vision in the United States.” She also writes:
At the end of each month I will post a receipt on this page for the donation to the ACLU. 475 calendars have been sold so far, for two donations totaling $5700. The ACLU matched it, making the donation $11,400 as of October 15. … THANK YOU ALL!
That’s a good, good haul thus far for the ACLU.
The calendar (should you want one for yourself, by chance) is here.
Note for any new readers: 7-Imp’s 7 Kicks is a weekly meeting ground for taking some time to reflect on Seven(ish) Exceptionally Fabulous, Beautiful, Interesting, Hilarious, or Otherwise Positive Noteworthy Things from the past week, whether book-related or not, that happened to you. New kickers are always welcome.
1) Thanksgiving Day was just us four.
2) Two Friendsgiving celebrations this week.
3) Knives Out on Thanksgiving night. I even broke my no-movies-in-theaters rule. (I usually end up next to someone loud.) Such a fun movie. (And no one chewed their popcorn loudly next to me. Whew.)
4) I devoured Jacqueline Woodson’s Red at the Bone in about two days. So good.
5) I created a new holiday music playlist that is over three hours long. (After all, I have a long drive ahead of me this weekend.)
6) I’m typing this on Friday, and Sam Phillips (my favorite) has promised new holiday music this weekend. I’m excited.
7) Speaking of new holiday songs …
What are YOUR kicks this week?
Jules, Yes, yes, yes, to Julie’s calendar. Thank you for showcasing it. I laughed at the 667…good choice, Jules.
I want to see Knives Out. We just watched The Irishman on Netflix. Well done.
My kicks:
1- 5. All the outpouring of love and donations for my niece, Hannah.
6. Beginning a December haiku challenge: #haikuforkindness as well as #haikuforjustice.
7. Family and friends.
7.5. This space where we gather each week.
Jone, what happened to your niece, if you don’t mind me asking? … Those are some hashtags I can get behind. Happy haiku-writing!
Good morning, Imps! Happy holidays!
Hi Julie! Great cause.
Hi Jules! That sounds like a good week.
Jone: I too am grateful for this space!
My kicks:
1) Blankets
2) Amusement
3) Shared joy
4) Shared stories
5) Content
6) Certainty
7) Break
Little Willow: Happy break! Happy blankets too.
Love this calendar & all of her artwork! Just spent some time at her online shop looking at the beautiful prints and scarves for sale.
Jules – yay for Friendsgivings and Thanksgiving! new Sam Phillips!! Glad you liked Knives Out – it was so fun! rachel Syme has a great interview with JLC at the New Yorker right now.
Jone – yay for family and friends and the outpouring of love and support for your niece.
Little Willow – love all your kicks, and especially shared joy and a break.
My kicks this week:
1) Morning yoga
2) Thanksgiving dinner out – no dirty dishes!
3) Made my first entirely-from-scratch pie (which means I made the pie crust from scratch – something I’d never done before.) The “Aren’t You Sweet Sweet Potato Pie” from Sugar Butter Flour the Waitress Pie Book. Pie was delicious but my pie crust needs work.
4) Got the Christmas tree Friday & trimmed it last night.
5) Booking last minute but much needed massage yesterday.
6) By helping a colleague I also reminded myself of a resource I’d forgotten I could use to help me for an upcoming trial – win-win!
7) Daisy getting a puppacino after underwater treadmill on Friday – she gets so excited and so happy.
7.5) Having time to relax at home with Daisy and friends, its been very nice.
BONUS KICKS – last year we made 2 kitty shelters for the feral kitties in the neighborhood. Yesterday I emptied them of the old straw bedding and put in new fresh straw bedding – just in time because it SNOWED LAST NIGHT!! It didn’t stick, but it was so pretty to watch the flurries in the wind, and know the kitties had nice dry warm shelter.
Have a great week imps!
Yes, Rachel, my best friend bought me one of her scarves once. Beautiful. … Congrats on the pie! I have never in my life tried to make my own crust, so kudos to you for trying. Also, I give you a cyber fist bump for your kitty shelter. That is the BEST.
Have a good week, you all!
