7-Imp’s 7 Kicks #767: Featuring Matthew Forsythe
October 31st, 2021 by jules
Happy Halloween, dear Imps!
I don’t have a picture book for you all today, because I want to take a moment to share a bit of news I just learned. (I’m slow, and you all may already know this!) It wasn’t till I was goofing around on Instagram yesterday that I learned that illustrator Matthew Forsythe designed the upcoming new short film from Aardman (coming to Netflix in November). Robin Robin is what Forsythe describes as a holiday musical (directed by Dan Ojari and Michael Please). If you head to Forsythe’s page at Instagram, you can see some of his design work (in a few of his more recent posts). One of those images is pictured above.
In my review (not out yet) at the Horn Book of Forsythe’s newest picture book (not out yet), I wrote: “More, please, of Forsythe’s richly imagined forest worlds.” Looks like my wish will come true — and in a whole other medium! I’m excited. Here’s the trailer:
Note for any new readers: 7-Imp’s 7 Kicks is a weekly meeting ground for taking some time to reflect on Seven(ish) Exceptionally Fabulous, Beautiful, Interesting, Hilarious, or Otherwise Positive Noteworthy Things from the past week, whether book-related or not, that happened to you. New kickers are always welcome.
1) A walk in the rain.
2) A friend’s book launch.
3) An impromptu Halloween costume.
4) My daughters and their friends have a Star Wars costume theme this year.
5) Watching this with the family this week:
6) I’m still not so sure what will happen with my favorite character on What We Do in the Shadows, but I’m a little less upset after the season finale this past week. (No spoilers, promise.)
7) Andrea Davis Pinkney honoring her father-in-law at Instagram by writing, in part: “If you want to extend the gifts Jerry Pinkney brought to this world, please connect with a child today. Get a book. Read together. Pay special attention to the young people who are on the fringes, the ones who struggle, the non-readers, the kids whose lights may not be shining as brightly, but whose gifts can be discovered when we take the time to listen and learn from them. That’s what Jerry Pinkney brought to all of us.”
What are YOUR kicks this week?
I am now following Matthew Forsythe. Will look for the movie.

Jules – yay for your friend’s book launch and watching classic cartoons with the family. As usual, WWDITS did not disappoint with the season finale – so funny! What Star Wars characters did your girls choose, or did the create their own?
Jone – love all your kicks, but 1-4 especially. Good luck on the submissions!
Little Willow – am i reading your kicks correctly that you finished a project? Anything you can direct us to? Love hopeful and clever!
My kicks this week:

by Rachel October 31st, 2021 at 1:10 pmJone, good luck with your poetry submissions!
Little Willow: What Rachel said!
Rachel: My oldest sewed a Luke costume, and the youngest will be Leia. I think they’ll have a Darth Maul and Padme with them too. … What a good week you had. I love that you watched some seasonal movies. Last night we watched Clue again.
Have a happy Halloween, you all, and a good week!
