Selma G. Lanes once wrote, “If you would truly teach young children through the books they listen to or read themselves, give them a hero who is an unregenerately bad example, a rotter through and through.” At Kirkus today, I’ve got some thoughts on this, partially prompted by a picture book from Japanese author/illustrator Yoko Shima, who goes by Yokococo, called Matilda and Hans. That link is here.

Last week, I wrote here about three new sequels (of sorts) that won’t let you down. They include (as pictured above) Ole Könnecke’s Anton and the Battle (Gecko Press, January 2013); Bink & Gollie: Best Friends Forever by Kate DiCamillo and Alison McGhee and illustrated by Tony Fucile (Candlewick, April 2013); and Marilyn Singer’s Follow Follow: A Book of Reverso Poems (Dial, February 2013), illustrated by Josée Masse.

Below, I’ve got a bit more art from Anton and the Battle, as well as Follow Follow. Enjoy.

Finally, here’s a brief note from Marilyn Singer, pictured below, since I wanted to know what she’s working on now and what she’s up to next …

Marilyn: In the Fall, my collection of poems about our presidents, Rutherford B., Who Was He?, illustrated by John Hendrix, will be published by Disney-Hyperion.

I recently completed a book of poems about social dances—in the rhythms of the dances—and I’m currently working on a new book of reversos based on Greek myths, both for Dial/Penguin. The myths will be illustrated by the amazing Josée Masse. I can’t wait to see what she does with them!

  1. Love the phrase “rotter through and through”!! That is such a great line.

  2. Those Marilyn Singer books are a-maze-ing. Love ’em!

  3. Anton! Bink and Gollie! I had missed those last week.

  4. I LOVE those Marilyn Singer books. My 2nd Graders and I played guess the character and talked about differing perspectives during poetry month.

  5. Jennifer: That is wonderful!

    Thanks, all.
