I’ve got a review over at BookPage of Sean Ferrell’s I Don’t Like Koala (Atheneum, April 2015), illustrated by Charles Santoso. That is here, and I’ve got some art from the book here today at 7-Imp.

To boot, I’ve got some illustrations from another Santoso-illustrated book, Jessica Young’s Spy Guy, coming to bookshelves in May from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, the story of a very loud, very bumbly spy and his “Chief” (a.k.a. his dad). Looks like the Spy Guy illustrations were created digitally, and the Koala illustrations were colored digitally — but originally created in pencil. There’s a definite difference in the two; there’s more texture, for one thing, in the Koala illustrations, and the Spy Guy illustrations channel more of a traditional cartoon vibe, which is fitting for this light and fun slapstick story.

Santoso, who lives in Australia, is an animation-studio concept artist/art director by day and illustrator by night! Here’s a bit more art from both books. Enjoy. …

Art from Jessica Young’s Spy Guy:

“So Spy Guy went to Headquarters to see the Chief. ‘Chief!’ he said. ‘Tell me the secret to spying!’ ‘Spy Guy,’ said the Chief, ‘that you must discover for yourself.
But if you seek to sneak, try not to speak.'”

“Spy Guy put on his brand-new shoes. He didn’t make a sound as he crept through town. But … everyone saw him coming.”

Note for any new readers: 7-Imp’s 7 Kicks is a weekly meeting ground for taking some time to reflect on Seven(ish) Exceptionally Fabulous, Beautiful, Interesting, Hilarious, or Otherwise Positive Noteworthy Things from the past week, whether book-related or not, that happened to you. New kickers are always welcome.

* * * Jules’ Kicks * * *

I’m typing this while listening to President Obama’s remarks at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner, and it’s funny stuff. (The Anger Translator made me laugh outloud.) My kicks 1-7 will be that — and, selfishly, I want to hear the rest of it, so I’m off! But tell me …

What are YOUR kicks this week?

  1. This Koala book looks so good. I can’t wai get a hold of it.
I watched the anger translator video last night before crashing into bed after a long day at the New England SCBWI Conference.
I’d love to tell you more about how overwhelmed and inspired I am but I’ve got to get going or I’ll miss the coffee and I really could use some coffee.
    Have a great week all!

  2. Good morning. The two characters in these books seem so fun.
Jules, only saw some of President Obama’s remarks on the news.
Moira, enjoy your coffee, I’m sipping tea.
My kicks can be summed up as poetry, Poetry Rocks performs, and getting poetry postcards in the mail. If you signed up and are waiting, they’re coming this week.
    Have a great week.

  3. Good morning, imps and koalas and cats and spies!

    Jules, I just watched that.

Moira: Hope you have some time to rest.

    Jone: Have fun!

My kicks for the past week:
    1) Shows
    2) Pop culture references
    3) Trust
    4) Plans
    5) Mellow
    6) Hydration
    7) Vanilla

  4. Hi All!

Seems like we are all running today!

Just popping in to say hi and that my biggest kick is that is was not freezing yesterday or today. Warm sunny weather makes everything better!

Have a great week fellow kickers!

  5. Sorry I didn’t respond yesterday, dear kickers. We’re trying to buy a house, and that took ALL day. I did not want to be a grown-up any more when we got home, and I buried myself under the covers after I put my own children to bed!

Moira: So glad the conference was inspiring!

Jone: I GOT MY POSTCARD, and I love it so much!

LW: I’m so bad at pop culture references from the 1980s. It’s a running joke in our house, my husband always asking me if I actually EVER saw any ’80s movies. VANILLA. YUM.

Hi Stacey! Here’s hoping your good weather continues.

  6. I love, love, love the little boy Adam’s facial expressions in I Don’t Like Koala! What a treat to admire Mr. Santoso’s work.

  7. Loved seeing these two characters together. Charles is amazing! So true about the texture—I want to pet that koala. And I love how he brought Spy Guy to life! Hope all are well!

  8. […] More books with Viking! The Society for Underrepresented Animals is going to be illustrated by Charles Santoso, and Help Wanted: One Rooster is coming after […]
