I’ve got a tiny peek today inside Kaori Takahashi’s Knock! Knock!, published by Tara Books this month and with text from Gita Wolf. Tiny, as in just two little illustrations, but if you want more information, you can head over to my BookPage review of the book. As you’ll read there, this is a story that quite literally unfolds (clear some space when you read it) to tell the story of a young girl in search of her toy bear.

That review is here.

* * * Jules’ Kicks * * *

1) Oh, Prince. The kick, though, is all the music he gave us.

2) I talked about Wild Things! yesterday at the Southern Kentucky Book Fest, and I got to see friends and make some new ones.

3) Making progress on some research. Slow but steady.

4) Hearing good news for friends.

5) Reading this about a musician you very rarely see, who made, back in 1988, an album I love.

6) Doctor Who news.

7) I am wearing out this CD. Such good songwriting. (And the harmonies are exquisite.)

What are YOUR kicks this week?

  1. The little.girl.in Knock!Knock! Seems full of life. Thank you for sharing.
Jules, I agree, the music of Prince. Can’t wait to hear about your research.
    My Kicks:
    1. Watched a great documentary about Harper Lee.
    2. Read Pax by Pennypacker. Must admit I clinched through the whole book worried how it would.turn out.
    3. The looks on my Poetry Rocks group when I gave them poetry books at our celebration party.
    4. The glow at sunset many days this week.
    5. Buster, my dog.
    6. Keeping up with National.Poetry Month.
    7. Oldest grandgirl.
    Have a great week.

  2. Good morning, Imps!

Kaori Takahashi: Thank you for sharing your art.

    1) Announcements
    2) Encouragement
    3) Water
    4) Preparation
    5) Confirmation
    6) Communication
    7) One degree of separation

  3. Jone, I read a galley of Pax at … the end of last year maybe? So good! … I love your third kick.

    Have a good week!

  4. What a fun book, I love the chicken peeking at the little girl from her perch in the basket in the first illustration.

Prince. So heartbroken, but yes, the kick is definitely all the music, & the life memories entwined with it.

Jules – so glad you had fun in Kentucky! Thanks for the music links, will check them out later.

Jone – What a good week! Hi to Buster.

    My kicks:
    1) Reading everyone else’s memories of Prince, his music, seeing him concert, how much he truly gave the world through his music – his music connected so many people. He was a truly unique soul.
    2) The video on SNL last night of Prince playing Let’s Go Crazy at the afterparty for the 40th anniversary. To see his joy in playing, & how starstruck the celebs were.
    3) Currently watching Beyoncé’s Lemonade over coffee this morning. She is a masterful visual storyteller, & parts are so emotionally raw & honest – it’s breathtaking.
    4) Currently reading “Just Fall,” by Nina Sadowsky.
    5) Blazers!
    6) Cold rainy weather returned, good reading weather.
    7) Daisy & her sweet silly self.
7.5) Being reminded to add Mad Hot Ballroom to my watch list before it leaves Netflix in May.

    Have a wonderful week IMPS!

  5. I think my kicks were eaten by dingoes. I tried posting them twice. 🙂

  6. Hey there Imps
    Long time, no see.
Jules – I’ve been randomly singing bits of Prince songs the past few days. My kids are confused.
Jone – I’ve been curious about Pax. I’ll have to check it out.
Rachel – Lemonade is on my list today.
LW – Sorry to miss your kicks. I’ll find out in a minute if the blog is still hungry.

    Kicks
    1. Nothing like a trip to the ER to make you appreciate your health. My girl got stitches from a bike crash, nothing broken.
    2. Headed to the New England SCBWI Conf. This weekend.
    3. Had fun doing one of those woodsy rope course things.
    4. Raspberry Beret
    5. Learning how to make a book from my Four and Twenty Blackbirds project. https://www.facebook.com/moira.swiatkowski/videos/10209445124873363/
    6. Ice Cream season is open.
    7. Game of Thrones tonight

Hope you are all well xo

  7. Rachel, I have not heard of the show (movie?) in your last kick, but I shall look it up! I’m curious to see/hear Lemonade. I’ve heard good things about it. YAY DAISY.

Sorry, Little Willow! I just saved them from the wild dingoes. I love “water” as a kick, as well as your last one. Sounds like you brushed shoulders with the famous? Or something.

Moira: I’m so glad your daughter is okay. Oof. Was she brave about the stitches? Have fun at the conference! … I’m looking forward to both GOT *and* Veep.

Have a good week, you all!

  8. LW: Water and one degree. Sounds mysterious.
    Rachel: Blazers and Prince
Moira:Just requested GOT and Rasberry Beret, Love!

  9. LW – love water, communication & one degree of separation.

Moira – stitches! Glad she’s ok. GOT yes! Cannot wait!

Jules – you will love Mad Hot Ballroom – it is a documentary about fifth graders in public school in NY who wind up taking ballroom dancing for a citywide competition. Watched it this afternoon & it was great!

    Have a great week everyone!

  10. My daughter was very brave through the whole thing and she bravely went to school this morning despite her face still looking banged up.
In other daughter news she is now officially taller than me. Sigh

  11. Thanks, Rachel! I’ll look it up.

Moira: Way to go, your daughter! My 12-year-old is taller than me too. Or she might be the same height. I need to check that.
