7-Imp’s 7 Kicks #487: Featuring Lynn Rae Perkins

h1 June 12th, 2016 by jules

Good morning, dear Imps!

I’ve got a review over at BookPage of Lynne Rae Perkins’s Frank and Lucky Get Schooled (Greenwillow, June 2016), which is such an excellent picture book. Normally, I like to link to these reviews from here at 7-Imp so that I can also show you some art from the book. But today, I don’t have art; I’m going to just link you to the review. And that’s because BookPage chose the book as a Children’s Top Pick for this month. This means they included two spreads from the book in their review, to which I enthusiastically say (because I’ve already had my coffee this morning and am capable of enthusiasm by this point), YAY!

So, you can head over here to read all about it and see that bit of art, which I highly recommend, because—as I’ve already noted and as I say in the review—it’s such a well-crafted book. And, if you love picture books as much as I do, you don’t want to miss it.

[Fun Fact, speaking of Ms. Perkins: Home Lovely is one of my favorite picture books of all time.]

Note for any new readers: 7-Imp’s 7 Kicks is a weekly meeting ground for taking some time to reflect on Seven(ish) Exceptionally Fabulous, Beautiful, Interesting, Hilarious, or Otherwise Positive Noteworthy Things from the past week, whether book-related or not, that happened to you. New kickers are always welcome.

* * * Jules’ Kicks * * *

1) Our realtor. He’s a realtor bad-ass, you all. I feel like this moving thing is going to happen soon. Very soon. With him as our guide, though, I am not worried.

2) The girls made some pretty delicious candy this week. (It’s the little things.)

3) These thoughts on book selection and omission from author Kate Messner.

4) You gotta admit this TED Talk parody is pretty funny. (“humble head nod”)

5) Even though they have a brand-new CD out, I’m just now getting around to Ages and Ages’s 2014 CD. It’s good stuff. I may have posted this below two years ago, but why not again?

6) Milestones.

7) The girls sewed Doctor Who aprons in art class.

What are YOUR kicks this week?

  1. Whoa, I love with Frank and Lucky. Must get.
Jules, thanks for sharing Do the Right Thing. Good luck on the moving thing.. is the market crazy there? So glad to have moved last year as it’s really silly in Portland. Loved the apron.
    My kicks:
    1. Impromptu dinner out with friends.
    2. A day with no official.plans.
    3. Used book fair at school. Kids bought a lot of books.
    4. Healthy eating.
    5. A poem offering from a second grader.
    6. Fresh peaches and cherries.
    7. The end of the school year on Thursday.
    Have a great week.

  2. Good morning, Imps! Hope you are safe and sound today and everyday.

Hello to Lynne Rae Perkins and Frank and Lucky.

Jules: I always appreciate the little things. Wishing you the best of luck with the move. What do the aprons look like?

Jone: Hurrah for impromptu good gatherings, for books, poems, and fruit, and for days off/open.

My kicks from the past week:
    1) Opening
    2) Music
    3) Focus
    4) Readings
    5) Opportunities
    6) Steady
    7) Seen and heard

  3. Jone: According to our realtor, our home will sell crazy-fast, and I believe that. Finding our new one might take a bit longer, but it’s all very do-able. The market, in short and to answer your question, is good.

End of the school year, yay! Congrats! I like your second kick. Best kind of day. Enjoy it.

Little Willow: I’ll try to put photos up here later (of the aprons). … “Opening.” Always the best!

  4. Love Frank and Lucky! And Do the Right Thing, will definitely have to check out more of Ages and Ages.

Jules – loved the Dr. Who aprons (the one I saw), and hooray for kickass realtors to help you navigate the house-selling and house-buying.

Jone – days with no plans are wonderful. Sounds like you had a lovely week.

LW – yay for Opening, Focus & Opportunities.

    My quick kicks this week:
    1) Read Jojo Moyes’ “Me Before You,” and “After You” in quick succession. Cannot wait to see Daenarys in the movie version of the first book.
    2) Veep. Much needed laughter today.
    3) Lin Manuel Miranda. What a bright light that man is.
    4) Daisy.
    5) Sunshine.
    6) Getting to drive to the Columbia River Gorge several times in one week – such beautiful scenery that never gets old.
    7) James Corden. Carpool Karoake & the Tonys. So much yes.
    7.5) Love.

Hold on to the good things, spread more love, and have a wonderful week!

  5. Lin-Manuel rocks.
    🙂

    I love The Tony Awards!

  6. Rachel: Veep just seems to get funnier, doesn’t it? Every week.

I’m glad you had a good week with sunshine, Daisy, and music.

Yes to LOVE. I typed this post before the horrific events on Saturday night. Gun control. Gun control. Gun control.

    Have a good week, all.

  7. Rachel, p.s.: This 2014 Ages to Ages CD is great Summer music — happy, hand-clappy kind of tunes. They have a brand-new one I haven’t heard yet, which I hear is a bit more subdued.
