I have a review over at BookPage of Ashley Bryan’s new book, Freedom Over Me: Eleven Slaves, Their Lives and Dreams Brought to Life (Atheneum/Caitlyn Dlouhy Books, September 2016). That is here, and today I share a few spreads from the book.

Note for any new readers: 7-Imp’s 7 Kicks is a weekly meeting ground for taking some time to reflect on Seven(ish) Exceptionally Fabulous, Beautiful, Interesting, Hilarious, or Otherwise Positive Noteworthy Things from the past week, whether book-related or not, that happened to you. New kickers are always welcome.

* * * Jules’ Kicks * * *

1) Carla Hayden!

2) The Beatles: Eight Days a Week in the newly-renovated Belcourt Theatre in Nashville! It was a very entertaining documentary and fun to watch in a sold-out show.

3) This fabulous piggy bank auction. You know you want to bid on a wonderful illustrated piggie. Right? Right!

4) I’m excited about the Horn Book’s new blog on reading and families. I’m even going to contribute a post relatively soon.

5) Speaking of … it was fun to be a guest this week on the Horn Book podcast.

6) A sleep-over this weekend with a dear high school friend and her mother and her girls and my girls. S’mores!

7) As I’m typing this, the ten-year-old is in the next room on the piano, teaching herself more of “Für Elise.” She’s trying so hard to nail it. I love to hear her play.

What are YOUR kicks this week?

  1. Good morning, Imps!

Hello, Ashley Bryan! Thank you for sharing illustrations from Freedom Over Me.

Jules: I look forward to listening to the podcast. Congratulations. High-five to your daughter! She can do it!

My kicks from the past week:
    1) Offers
    2) Rehearsals
    3) Attempts
    4) Patience
    5) Harmony
    6) Scents
    7) Sense

  2. What beautiful vibrant illustrations – I love the color and the movement.

Jules – Carla Hayden is awesome! Thanks for that link, I missed the news about her and enjoyed going down a google rabbit hole learning about her this morning. Hooray for multi-generational sleepovers & s’mores! And I didn’t get to reply to your last comment last week, but one of these days I’m going to make it to Nashville so I can take you out for cocktails! (I’ll let you pick the venue since you’ll know where the best live music is.)

LW – Harmony Scents and Sense! Yes!

    My kicks this week:
    1) Learning about Carla Hayden & her history-making appointment!
    2) Bought a new (to me) SUV-type car to replace the car that was totaled. It’s been Daisy-approved, since she rides higher-up now she seems to like it even more than the car.
    3) Going out for drinks with friends last night when the cold and rain made more inclined to be a hermit. It was good to catch up with everyone & I was happy I went.
    4) Work has me all over the place and the variety is really interesting, which is fun.
5)Just started reading, “The Great New Orleans Kidnapping Case: Race, Law, and Justice in the Reconstruction Era,” by Michael A. Ross. Its a true story, and while the narrative started a little slow, I’m about 5 chapters in and completely engrossed.
    6) Sons of Anarchy. I’m on the final season and slowing down my watching to draw it out a bit. Such a Greek tragedy. Such great characters. I love it.
    7) New curtains. The color pop brightens up & brings more energy to the main room in my house. Such a simple thing, but I am amazed at how it changes the feel of the room and generally makes me happy.
7.5) Impish Daisy taking a milk carton out the recycling before it was brought outside. She knew she was misbehaving and was very funny about it. She was trying to get my attention because I had deviated from her daily routine. Dogs with a sense of humor are the best.

Fall is here in Oregon – we’ve had a weekend of colder temps and rain. Have a wonderful warm week Imps!

  3. Thanks, Little Willow. Yes, Ada will eventually get it, I’m sure. Glad you had a good week.

Rachel: I’d LOVE that (if you ever came to middle TN). Did you name your new car yet? … It’s still hot here. I’m ready for Autumn. Glad you had such a good week too.

  4. Rachel: There’s a Sons of Anarchy novel entitled Bratva written by my friend Christopher Golden, set between seasons 3 and 4. Check it out! Also: Hi Daisy!

  5. […] especially excited to use two picture books as part of this curriculum. In Freedom Over Me: Eleven Slaves, Their Lives and Dreams Brought to Life, Ashley Bryan gives voice to eleven slaves. This is not a book about the enslaved; it is their […]
