7-Imp’s 7 Kicks #565: Featuring Phoebe Wahl

Today’s illustration is for those of you who, this past week, celebrated the first night of Hanukkah. Also, I always like to see Phoebe Wahl’s artwork. (I was just about to send you all to Phoebe’s shop, which I frequent, but it looks like it’s closed for the holidays. You can always make a note for future shopping, though, because I’m telling you there is such good stuff there.)

Note for any new readers: 7-Imp’s 7 Kicks is a weekly meeting ground for taking some time to reflect on Seven(ish) Exceptionally Fabulous, Beautiful, Interesting, Hilarious, or Otherwise Positive Noteworthy Things from the past week, whether book-related or not, that happened to you. New kickers are always welcome.

* * * Jules’ Kicks * * *

1) YAY, ALABAMA!

2) Remember this recent post? Yuko has just signed with Writers House! Congrats to her!

3) She-Ra in the hands of Noelle Stevenson. WOO HOO!

4) This book is now a new addition to my Christmas wish list.

5) This StoryCorps piece is beautiful. (Also, Knoxville represents!)

6) Pastor Mike McBride, as quoted in this NPR piece from moment 1:45 to 2:32. What he said, as I am utterly baffled on a consistent basis by extreme conservatives’ ideas of Christianity.

7) This Amazon customer review (about a mug shaped like a Dungeons & Dragon die) cracked me up.

What are YOUR kicks this week?

  1. What a perfect illustration to share today, Jules. I hope Phoebe’s shop reopens. I want to check it out.
Jules, i couldn’t agree more about Alabama. Hoping it’s the start of a wave. Love the new book on your wishlist.
    My kicks:
    1. Placing wreaths in veteran graves yesterday for Wreaths Acriss America.
    2. Wrapping books for grand girls, grand niece, and grand nephews. They’re signed from local authors.
    3. Book talks for 4th and 5th grades with the public librarian. Theses are the reader choice nominees for WA Sasquatch and YRCA.
    4. Time with co-workers after work.
    5. That my cousin as well as my very dear friend didn’t lose their homes in the Ojai fire. It was a hairy week for them.
    6. Reading for CYBILS.
    7. Watched GET OUT and MUDBOUND.
    Have a wonderful week.

  2. Happy holidays, Imps! Hello, Phoebe!

    Jules: Woo hoo, indded!

    Jone: That’s so kind.

My kicks from the past week:
1 and 2) Empathy and understanding
    3) Effort
    4) Peace
    5) Possibilities
    6) Priorities
    7) Comfort

  3. Love today’s illustration, agree with Jone on the perfect timing, was just at a Hanukkah party last night.

Jules – yay Alabama! (I felt like a total nerd glued to my laptop watching the returns come in.) That StoryCorp story is so beautiful.

Jone – your placing wreaths on veterans graves is a such a thoughtful and lovely act. I loved Get Out. What’d you think? How was Mudbound? I’ve heard good things.

LW – Yes to all of your kicks this week, especially Empathy and Understanding.

    My kicks this week:
    1) The Hanukkah/Housewarming party I went to last night. Very fun & festive.
    2) Wrapping presents.
    3) New bathroom sink is now installed & working! (Its the little things. Next up is putting in a new floor.)
    4) Kelly Clarkson’s new album The Meaning of Life is sooo good. Her Carpool Karaoke is pretty great too: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8z_cg5CypRc
    5) Totally nerdy, but watching a lawyer I greatly admire arguing a motion on a case we’re working. She kicked ass, as usual.
    6) Daisy the snugglebug, even when she’s naughty. I left the house to run an errand in the middle of wrapping presents and she couldn’t help herself – she took a small stuffed animal meant for a young relative out of a bag and ripped its head off while I was gone. She immediately outed herself as I opened the door, with the guilty look, wagging tail, and “I’m so sorry” behavior. Silly dog.
    7) Hot chocolate with whipped cream and chocolate syrup.
7.5) The holiday season and everyone being of good cheer! Looking forward to personally delivering presents this coming week.

Have a merry and wonderful week Imps!

  4. Rachel: Hot chocolate rules. Kelly Clarkson can SING. High-five to the awesome lawyer, and hugs to Daisy!

  5. I’ll be back tomorrow, promise!

  6. To everyone who celebrates Hanukkah, Happy Hanukkah!

To all kickers, your kicks always give me warm fuzzy feelings. 🙂

    My kicks:

    1. My brothers.

    2. Throwing a surprise bridal shower for my future sister-in-law.

    3. Extra sleep!!! And coffee.

    4. Books. Reading. And coffee.

    5. Opportunities.

    6. Not being afraid to try.

    7. Friends.

  7. Sorry for my delay. Came down with a cold.

Jone, what a relief for your cousin and your friend. …. I really want to see Mudbound. The book is wonderful. And I loooved Get Out.

LW: Your first and second kicks go a long way, and I wish the world had more of them.

Rachel: I’m so glad to read about your holiday cheer, since the news has gotten all of us down lately. I can feel it too, but I’ll feel it more when this cold goes away. Also, I love your nerdy kick (and all of them).

Tarie, your future sister-in-law is so lucky to be joining your big, happy family! And those kicks are full of all good things — coffee, books, friends, family. Woo hoo!

Have a good week, you all.

  8. New commenter around here, so feeling a bit shy, but I know that there’s no need for that 🙂

Mainly writing to say how much I appreciate the image above, it is wonderful and feels more real than so much of what’s out there, image-wise. I’ll also add that I really appreciate this space more generally, even without commenting I really feel that sense of thoughtful community around something I love that is exceedingly rare on the internet.

While I’m here, my kicks, why not:
    1. Being on the verge of finally launching a maker series that’s at the heart of what I’ve been working on for a long time
    2. Getting that flu that’s been going around, but not being so down and out that I couldn’t manage taking care of my kids (small miracles, right?)
    3.Feeling better
    4. Client awaiting a sketch, an excellent excuse to sit and draw in the presence of the Hannukah candles
    5. Spending the day watching my kids race around the Exploratorium
    6. Getting a dinner invitation and a Hannukah party invitation, neither of which we’ll be able to go to, but lovely to be thought of anyway
    7. A house filled with treasures, ie children’s books. Otter Under Water by Jim Arnosky happens to specifically be on the brain right now…

Happy Holidays to you all! Thank you for this space, Jules!

  9. Hi, Adina! You just made my day. I’m so glad you commented.

I’m glad you’re feeling better. I inherited a cold this week, but I’m also glad it’s not worse. It could always be worse, I suppose. I like your last kick, in particular. Hope you get lots of rest and feel even better soon. Happy sketching!
