7-Imp’s 7 Kicks #637: Featuring The Great Indoors

I’m sending you to the Horn Book’s site today for a review I wrote of Julie Falatko’s very funny The Great Indoors (Disney-Hyperion, April 2019), illustrated by Ruth Chan. The review is here.

* * * Jules’ Kicks * * *

I’m purposely keeping things short and sweet this week. In fact, I’m typing this mid-week, because my family and I are going to up and fly to Los Angeles this week in order to see my faaaaavorite musician (whom I’m sure you’re all tired of me talking about) perform at the Largo on Thursday night. Needless to say, I’m excited. (Again, I’m typing this before the show, though you’ll be reading this after it.) Sam really only plays in L.A. anymore, and I really wanted to see her live again (I saw her live in 1994 and then 2004, but that’s it!), so we decided to do it — a short, whirlwind trip. Sam’s shows really are quite memorable, and I’m especially excited that my daughters will get to hear her live for the first time. (I’ve trained them, like a Sam Jedi, in her melodic ways.)

And my birthday is tomorrow, so this is pretty much the best gift EVER — to hear her and her INCREDIBLE band play again with my family there. I’ve been a fan of Sam’s music for about three decades now.

I’ll be back on Sunday and look forward to reading your kicks!

  1. Happiest birthday, Jules. Enjoy LA, the concert, and time with the family! How exciting! And while THER GREAT INDOORS is a great book, I am looking forward to a great weather week outside.
    My kicks:
    1. I may have mentioned Meow Wolf and going to it last week. But I went! Oh.My.Word! If ever you wanted to go to a Alice in Wonderland like place, this is it! What a trip!
    2. News my niece is returning to the west coast. I will miss having a reason to go to NYC but I’m glad she’ll be a 2 day drive away.
    3. Brief get away to Astoria with Chuck.
    4. Writing retreat W-F on the coast.
    5. Wrote 2 poems. One about nurses which I really like the draft.
    6. Submitted five haiku to the Haiku Society of America member anthology.
    7. Dinner with youngest daughter and grand girls yesterday. They were up from Medford.
    Have a great week.

  2. Happy birthday/birth week, Jules! Have a safe and happy trip! I hope all of you enjoyed the gig.

Good morning, Imps and woodland creatures!

Jone: Congrats on the new poems and submissions! Hope your niece has a smooth move.

    My kicks:
    1) Rehearsals
    2) Honey
    3) Rest
    4) Stretch
    5) Snacks
    6) Plans
    7) Marks

  3. Jone, best of luck with the submitted poems! I will have to look up Meow Wolf.

LW: Now I’m wondering if honey is metaphorical or literal. I do like some literal honey in my literal peppermint tea. …. And, yes, the show was great! I even got to talk to Sam afterwards. She came out to greet her fans.

Have a good week, you two!

  4. HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY JULES!!!!

Your kick is so awesome, so happy that you got to share your favorite musician with your girls. What a lovely gift for you and them.

The Great Indoors looks so fun and funny! Another book added to my list for young friends and relatives.

Jone – your trip to New Mexico looked like so much fun! What’s your chile order when there – red or green?

LW – Loving Rehearsals, rest and snacks this week.

Late this week, but here are my quick kicks:

    1) Watched Dead To Me on netflix and it is dark and fun, and I really loved seeing Christina Applegate and Linda Cardellini work so well together. (And James Marsden was a surprise – I feel like his acting chops get underestimated a lot.)
    2) Finished reading Mister max, The Book of Lost Things by Cynthia Voigt and it was a fun read.
    3) Went to a First Communion celebration for a friends daughter yesterday, sitting outside and catching up with friends on such a beautiful day was so nice.
    4) Daisy continues to recover nicely – spending time with her outdoors in the sunshine is always a treat.
    5) Another productive work week, looking forward to when things eventually slow down a bit.
    6) Finding the perfect birthday present for my nephew.
    7) GOT last night, although after last week all I want is to follow Arya on her adventures.
7.5) The glorious sunshine and weather we are having has me looking forward to summer and dinners outdoors again.

    Have a wonderful week Imps!!

  5. Thanks, Rachel! I hear you on Arya. I look forward to her re-appearing, whenever that may be. … So glad Daisy is recovering well. Hope work slows down for you soon. As for your last kick, we have a neighborhood pool right across the street. It is ALREADY open. When I get in and out of my car, I hear the happy sounds of summer. I’m not quite ready to swim (brr), but I’m ready for summer!

  6. And, as always, thanks for the book and TV recommendations. (That goes for EVERYone!)
