I reviewed the newest picture book, Wintercake (Greenwillow, October 2019), from author-illustrator (and Newbery Medalist) Lynne Rae Perkins for the Horn Book. If you’d like to read about the book, they included bits of that review in this round-up. (Scroll down to the bottom of that post.) And today here at 7-Imp I’ve a few illustrations from the book.

Note for any new readers: 7-Imp’s 7 Kicks is a weekly meeting ground for taking some time to reflect on Seven(ish) Exceptionally Fabulous, Beautiful, Interesting, Hilarious, or Otherwise Positive Noteworthy Things from the past week, whether book-related or not, that happened to you. New kickers are always welcome.

* * * Jules’ Kicks * * *

1) Walks with a chill in the air.

2) An off day at Cheekwood was a good day. Practically had the place to ourselves.

3) Rosepepper. Yum.

4) I think I mentioned this previously, but no really. The string arrangements on Angel Olsen’s new album.

5) Search Party.

6) The Mandalorian and Baby Yoda.

7) Marc Maron interviewing Joan Shelley.

What are YOUR kicks this week?

  1. Hello Imps! Hello bears! Hello Lynne Rae Perkins!

Jules: I love a good string arrangement.

My kicks from the past week:
1&2) Encounters with other people’s pets
    3) Beautiful music
    4) Calm
    5) Plans
    6) Doing the work
    7) Payoff from the work

  2. Flying by. I started to write this morning and was distracted by my two grands who were visiting.
I love the art work in this book. Who.wouldnt love Wintercake.
Jules, I want to visit Cheekwood. And Nashville.
LW, Calm is the best word!
My kicks 1-7: All three grandgirls together and we pulled off a great surprise. The WOW factor.
    Have a great week.

  3. I LOVE this warm and colorful artwork today! And very curious to know what a Winter cake is. The team room conversations are great and all the cakes are making me hungry.

Jules – did you have margaritas at Rosepepper? Cheekwood looks like a fun place to explore, especially if you have it to yourself.

Little Willow – encounters with other peoples pets is one of my favorite things. Big ups on doing the work and payoff from the work – that is always such a great feeling when you know you’ve put the hard work in.

    My kicks this week:
    1) This week’s The Good Place episode.
    2) Daisy in pajamas – she’s so cute and enjoys the extra warmth in colder weather.
    3) Getting to read in a comfortable chair with a blanket fresh from the dryer (Daisy had her own fresh warm blanket on the sofa) and with a virtual fire in a tv fireplace since it was a no-burn night – pure bliss.
    4) Louisiana’s election results – a good sign for the coming year.
    5) A long-term work project coming to a close. (Yay!)
    6) Decluttering in preparation for the holidays.
    7) Making plans for the holidays.
7.5) Dogs and humans and the bonds between them. Dogs are simply the best.

    Have a great week Imps!

  4. Jone – just missed you in cyberspace – hooray for pulling off grand surprises with your grandkids! Sounds like it was a lot of fun!

  5. Rachel: Thanks! Are there photos of Daisy in PJs that you can share??

    Jone: How fun! 🙂

  6. LW: Do you have your own pets? … Congrats on your hard (and beautiful) work.

Jone, come visit Nashville and ME! … So glad your granddaughters got to visit.

Rachel: No, I did not have margaritas, because I was driving. But boy howdy are they good ones. Oh, and as for this week’s Good Place episode, I turned to my family to ask: Is this the final one? It felt like it for a minute, huh? … Happy holiday-planning!

Have a good week, you all!

  7. Little Willow – haven’t taken any new pics of Daisy in pj’s this fall, but I’ll share here next time I do!

Jules – I thought it might be the last episode too! Very glad it wasn’t.
