7-Imp’s 7 Kicks #693: Featuring Elise Gravel

This image was created just this past week by author-illustrator Elise Gravel.

My heart is especially heavy this week for the Black people of this country. I’ve sat here for a long time, typing a lot of stuff about what it means to be an ally, and I’ve deleted all of it. All that really needs to be said is that Black Lives Matter. In lieu of my kicks, though you’re welcome to leave yours, here is a list of seven things I’ve found particularly helpful this week:

1) These thoughts from author Sherri L. Smith.

2) These reminders from Courtney Ariel.

3) This from Jay Smooth (thanks to a friend for tweeting it this week):

4) This informative piece from the great team at NPR’s Code Switch.

5) These books that can educate and enlighten (image credit is Jane Mount):

6) Add Jabari Asim’s books to that list, including this upcoming one (publishing on June 19):

7) This community poem.

  1. Thank you for sharing this art. Thank you for sharing these resources. Thank you for sharing your space.

  2. Thank you, Jules for all of this. Couldn’t agree more. My heart is heavy this week.

LW, I agree so much that this space is one of sharing and a place to be.

We have shared so many moments of history in this space since the beginning days of 7 Imp.

May healing and peace wash over the country this week.

  3. Jules – thank you for all these links and for this space. As Jone said, we have shared so many moments of history in this space. I am thankful for this space and all of you.

I’ll simply echo what so many others have said – VOTE.
In Portland we just elected a progressive DA (he doesn’t take office until January), and I am hopeful he will be able to implement change as not only is he very aware of the enormous racial disparity in the criminal justice system in Portland, he currently heads an organization that did some of the research on the problem.

Holding all of you in my thoughts during this very sad time.

  4. Yes, Rachel. Yes.
