7-Imp’s 7 Kicks #720: Featuring Qin Leng

h1 December 6th, 2020 by jules

Let’s take a look today at A Year of Everyday Wonders (Abrams, December 2020), written by Cheryl B. Klein and illustrated by Qin Leng. I reviewed this one over here at BookPage, if you’d like to read more about it. It’s a charmer.

Here today at 7-Imp are some of the book’s illustrations …

Note for any new readers: 7-Imp’s 7 Kicks is a weekly meeting ground for taking some time to reflect on Seven(ish) Exceptionally Fabulous, Beautiful, Interesting, Hilarious, or Otherwise Positive Noteworthy Things from the past week, whether book-related or not, that happened to you. New kickers are always welcome.

* * * Jules’s Kicks * * *

1) Walks.

2) Star Trek: Discovery continues to kick ass. I want Michael Burnham and Hugh to be my BFFs. Also, Tilly.

3) ALA’s new “Read” poster and bookmarks.

4) Discovering Buck Owens’s rendition of “Jingle Bells.” (I know. It’s so Nashville of me.) Get up and dance.

5) Catherine O’Hara.

6) Starting this book, because I’m a nerd like that.

7) Surprises in the mail.

What are YOUR kicks this week?

  1. Jules, you are such a great appreciator AND sharer of morsels I would never have discovered except through you!
    1. The new READ poster has convinced me to give my husband (and me!) the Disney channel for Christmas so we can watch The Mandalorian. 2. Can I borrow Shady Characters when you finish it?!?! 3.Your links to various Tiny Desk Concerts have introduced me to all kinds of music. 4. Your daughter’s needle-wizardry is a revelation…. 5. I’d go bankrupt if I actually bought every picture book your reviews make me covet, but at least I get the JD abridged version here and through BookPage and Calling Caldecott…
My own (non-Jules-generated) kicks for the week include 6. having fun shopping for Christmas and Hanukkah presents without leaving my house OR ordering from Amazon (well, I’m doing that too, if we’re honest, but thinking of who needs what that i already own is so much more entertaining!) 7. decorating outgoing parcels with old Christmas cards, to the consternation of USPS…
    happy ho-ho-ho-ing!

  2. What a great book. I love Qin Leng’s work.
Jules, Shady Characters looks fascinating…will put on hold.list.
Mary, I have loved ordering online from other places this season.
    My kicks:
    1. Getting some things out in the mail.
    2. Buster’s continued recovery.
    3. Friend time.
    4. Picking up books for gifts.
    5. Decorations
    6. Holiday lights.
    7. Zooming with poetry friends.
    Have a great week.

  3. Hi Imps! Hi Qin Leng! I would like some hot chocolate (always!) and waffles for sure!

Jules: That was a fun rendition. I got up and danced! Have fun with the punctuation. Say hello to the ampersand and the interrobang for me, please!

Mary: They have some really good concerts on there!

Jone: I read “Zooming” and still pictured pets running around a house at high speed rather than a teleconference…though I know pets may hold Zoom meetings, too. 😉 Hi Buster!

    My kicks:
    1) Movies
    2) Opportunities
    3) Beating deadlines
    4) Timing
    5) Virtual visits
    6) Okay
    7) Sleep

  4. What a great book! First haircut, closely followed by second haircut, made me laugh.

Jules – what great kicks. I grabbed a few posters & was sad to see the bookmarks are out of stock. (I also accidentally ordered 200 Baby Groot bookmarks – didn’t realize they were sold in packs of 100!)

Mary – I share in your appreciation of Jules as sharer of great things I never would have discovered on my own! Hooray for ordering presents safely & your decorating outgoing packages.

Jone – so happy Buster continues to recover! Yay for books as gifts and holiday lights and time with friends!

Little Willow – Absolutely love your kick of opportunities and wow, beating deadlines is such an amazing feeling!

    My kicks this week:
    1) Reading Val Kilmer’s autobiography, “I’m Your Huckleberry” and its a ride.
    2) Almost finished my re-watch of The West Wing. Its such a comforting world to slip into, filled with people who care about the world.
    3) A long overdue long phone call catchup with a friend, lots and lots of laughs.
    4) Ordering Christmas presents, super excited for a custom one I ordered for my college bff, I think its perfect, fingers crossed that I’m right.
    5) Time’s first ever Kid of the Year, Gitanjali Rao. https://time.com/5916772/kid-of-the-year-2020/
    6) Since we can’t travel right now, I’ve been spending time looking at photos of past trips, and its great to relive those memories. Even cooler, I found a pic I took of a NYC park bench with an awesome memorial to a woman remembered as “Outraged and Outrageous.” A Google search did not disappoint: https://threadreaderapp.com/thread/1335693755442110467.html
    7) Impromptu dance and play parties with Daisy. She gets happy and excited a little bit of the “zoomies” that Little Willow was talking about.
7.5) Easy Sunday mornings n the couch with coffee and Daisy.

    Have a great week, Imps!

  5. Aw, thanks, Mary (and Rachel)! Mary, yes of course you can borrow that book when I’m done.

Jone, I’m relieved to hear Buster is recovering well!

LW: The interrobang is MY FAVORITE.

Rachel: Go, Norma! Enjoy your old photos. Hugs to Dasiy, as always.

Have a good week, you all!

  6. Oh, and Rachel: Yes, those bookmarks come in packs of 100. Ha! You have a lot, don’t you? Well, you can always give some away! I got a pack with Grogu (for us Danielsons), and I’m going to donate what’s left over to my daughters’ school library.

  7. Jules – I double-checked my order and looks like I’ll be getting 300 Baby Groot READ bookmarks, not 200. OOPS!
Lots to donate! If you haven’t donated your extra Baby Yoda’s yet and its not too much trouble, I would love it if you sent a few my way. I’ll send you some Baby Groots as a swap, with a surprise thrown in. 😉

  8. I’ll absolutely send you some! I only just ordered them, so it might be a while.

  9. Thank you! I just ordered mine yesterday, so mine will likely take a while too. 🙂
