You can read my review over at BookPage of Mượn Thị Văn’s unforgettable refugee tale, Wishes (Orchard, April 2021), illustrated by Victo Ngai. That review is here.

Here today at 7-Imp are some spreads. …

  1. Simply sublime. Can’t wait for pub date!

  2. I just looked at this book again while making my Mock Caldecott and I noticed each page has a small box/symbol of something. I am guessing it means something (maybe it’s Wish in Vietnamese?) but I can’t find anything. I was hoping that you had uncovered this and seen it too!

  3. Sarah, I do not know what that means, and a search got me nowhere. I’d love to find out. I’ll ask around!

  4. Sarah, looks like this marking is on other pieces at Victo’s site, so it may not be specific to this book?

  5. @Sarah: the box/square you notice on all the pages would be artist’s seal. It is the East Asian equivalent of a signature. You can find out more here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seal_(East_Asia)
@Jules: this info was probably added after your search but Wikipedia explains that the artist’s seal looks similar to one of the Chinese characters in her given name, but it is not that character; rather, when rotated 90deg, you can see her English name ‘Victo’ in the box. It’s here under the subheading ‘Working Process’: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victo_Ngai
