Simply sublime. Can’t wait for pub date!
by Susan Gal April 30th, 2021 at 12:00 pmI just looked at this book again while making my Mock Caldecott and I noticed each page has a small box/symbol of something. I am guessing it means something (maybe it’s Wish in Vietnamese?) but I can’t find anything. I was hoping that you had uncovered this and seen it too!
by Sarah August 22nd, 2021 at 3:33 pmSarah, I do not know what that means, and a search got me nowhere. I’d love to find out. I’ll ask around!
by jules August 23rd, 2021 at 5:19 pmSarah, looks like this marking is on other pieces at Victo’s site, so it may not be specific to this book?
by jules August 24th, 2021 at 7:55 am@Sarah: the box/square you notice on all the pages would be artist’s seal. It is the East Asian equivalent of a signature. You can find out more here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seal_(East_Asia)
by Shannon December 23rd, 2022 at 9:45 am@Jules: this info was probably added after your search but Wikipedia explains that the artist’s seal looks similar to one of the Chinese characters in her given name, but it is not that character; rather, when rotated 90deg, you can see her English name ‘Victo’ in the box. It’s here under the subheading ‘Working Process’: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Victo_Ngai
