I love a good story about a misfit. Enter Kelly DiPucchio’s Not Yeti (Viking, May 2021), illustrated by Claire Keane. I’ve a review of this one over at BookPage.

That review is here. Below are some spreads.

Enjoy!

“And when he read that humpback whales sing …
he rode his scooter to the pier just so he could sing back to them.”

“In the distance, Yeti could hear the riotous sounds of the Monster Bash & Barbecue — dishes breaking, heads butting, and Lloyd shouting.”

Note for any new readers: 7-Imp’s 7 Kicks is a weekly meeting ground for taking some time to reflect on Seven(ish) Exceptionally Fabulous, Beautiful, Interesting, Hilarious, or Otherwise Positive Noteworthy Things from the past week, whether book-related or not, that happened to you. New kickers are always welcome.

1) I’ll be having dinner with some friends this week. It’s been since the pandemic that we’ve gathered. I’m so excited. Yay, science.

2) My youngest is getting vaccinated today. Yay, science. Again.

3) Walks.

4) Beautiful weather.

5) Committee work.

6) This, from Rita Payés and featuring Elisabeth Roma:

7) Attending the “Celebration of Illustration” day this past Friday, hosted by the Association for Library Service to Children. It was all picture books, all day.

What are YOUR kicks this week?

  1. Oh Yeti, listening to whales and babysitting for free? I love the illustrations and how Yeti doesn’t feel lonely.
My kicks 1-7 are that we are on the road. Saw youngest daughter and the grands. Walked among redwoods, said hello to the ocean for you all and we’re headed home today.
    Have a great week.

  2. Jone! Oh, thank you for saying hi to the ocean for us. One of my bucket-list items is to one day see the redwoods near you.

    Safe travels!

  3. I love Yeti and his singing to the whales. This is a book that I will be getting for some young friends, along with a copy for myself.

Jules – yay science! Hooray for your youngest getting vaccinated and for the upcoming dinner with friends. Have the Rita Payes video on repeat right now, just lovely!

Jone – yay for road trips to see family, walking among redwoods and seeing the ocean. Safe travels home!

    My kicks this week:
    1) Made it through a very demanding and difficult week of work.
    2) A friend visited Daisy and hung out with her every day while I was at work.
    3) Supportive and helpful colleagues. They are appreciated more than they know.
    4) Sunshine.
    5) Having time to relax and recharge.
    6) Making flower arrangements for inside and outside with all my blooming roses.
    7) Ricotta toast with strawberries for brunch.
    7.5) Finding moments of joy.

    Have a great week Imps!

  4. Hi Imps! Hi Claire! Hi Yeti! Hope you are all having a lovely weekend.

Jules: Hugs to your youngest! Yay science! Thanks for the calm song. It was really pretty. I translated the lyrics afterwards. Have fun with your family and friends.

Jone: So glad you had a fun trip. Safe travels home!

Rachel: Sending good thoughts after the hard week. I hope next week is ten times better. How nice of your friend to visit Daisy daily during that week!

My kicks are basically the usual:
    1) Music
    2) Television
    3) Warm meals
    4) Fresh water
    5) Staying calm
    6) Staying safe
    7) Okay

  5. Jules: To clarify, I used an internet translation website.

  6. Rachel, doesn’t the song make you want to dance? It makes me want to dance in ways I’m not trained in. … Blooming roses! Nice. (Band name.) So glad you have the support of colleagues during difficult work weeks.

Little Willow: I had to look up those lyrics too. Glad for your warm meals, your calm, and your safety. (Since I chose a band name from Rachel’s kicks, I’ll choose Warm Meals from yours. Not a bad band name either.)

Have a good week, you all!
