7-Imp’s 7 Kicks #750: Featuring Heena Baek

h1 July 4th, 2021 by jules

I’ve a review over at BookPage of Heena Baek’s Moon Pops (Owlkids, August 2021). As you will read in my review, the book was originally published in South Korea and has been translated into English by Jieun Kiaer. Author-illustrator Heena Baek won the 2020 Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award, and this is the first of her books to be published in English. It is the story of a summer night so hot that the moon melts. So. A perfect book for summer.

Here is the review, and below are some spreads. …

“Everybody turned on their air conditioners, whir-whir. They turned on their fans,
rattle-rattle. They opened their fridge doors, hum-hum. And they closed their windows
to the heat, hoping to finally get some sleep.”

“The moon was melting! Granny ran out from apartment 503
with a bucket to catch the falling moon drops.”

“Granny stepped out to greet her neighbors with frozen moon pops.
She handed them out, one by one. They were icy and sweet.”

“As everyone licked their moon pops, something strange began to happen.
The heat was melting away.”

“Granny welcomed two strange rabbits into her home. She felt she had seen them somewhere before. ‘We come from the moon,’ they told her. ‘Our home has melted away.’ ‘Oh, how terrible.’ Granny sat and wondered what to do.
Her eyes fell on an empty flowerpot sitting on the kitchen table.”

Note for any new readers: 7-Imp’s 7 Kicks is a weekly meeting ground for taking some time to reflect on Seven(ish) Exceptionally Fabulous, Beautiful, Interesting, Hilarious, or Otherwise Positive Noteworthy Things from the past week, whether book-related or not, that happened to you. New kickers are always welcome.

1) The 2021 ALA Youth Media Awards winners have given their acceptance speeches, and the Horn Book is posting some, as they always do. Here is Michaela Goade’s Caldecott speech.

2) Plans to see friends tonight.

3) The unmitigated joy of children playing in splashy fountains outdoors during the summer.

4) Walks — with early July granting us a small breeze.

5) My new earrings. With a fox. In a tophat. And a monocole. Drinking tea.

6) The music they are playing in Loki slaps, as the young people say. Such as:

7) Speaking of music, this is my favorite song of the summer (and there’s a great story behind it about how The Go! Team found their singers for it):
