I’ve a review over at BookPage of Mac Barnett’s John’s Turn (Candlewick, March 2022), illustrated by Kate Berube. This one soars (bad pun not intended).

Here’s the review, and below are some spreads.

“Today was John’s turn. John brought two bags to school, his backpack and one with Sharing Gifts stuff. He was quiet at breakfast. We knew why. He was nervous.”

Note for any new readers: 7-Imp’s 7 Kicks is a weekly meeting ground for taking some time to reflect on Seven(ish) Exceptionally Fabulous, Beautiful, Interesting, Hilarious, or Otherwise Positive Noteworthy Things from the past week, whether book-related or not, that happened to you. New kickers are always welcome.

1) Kate Berube! Remember when she first visited?

2) The surprise under the dust jacket of John’s Turn.

3) Hurray for the Riff Raff’s new album is finally here.

4) The most deliciable meal with friends. (“Deliciable” is a word my oldest daughter would say when she was a preschooler.)

5) This poem a friend shared.

6) Finally wrapped up Station Eleven, which was some good, good television. Jeevan forever.

7) This is coming up soon, and I’m looking forward to it.

What are YOUR kicks this week?

  1. In fact I absolutely do remember when you first featured Kate! And here we are at gorgeous book 7. Lucky, lucky me. Thanks for all you do shining light on beautiful work, Jules!

  2. Lori, hi! And thanks!

  3. Love this book and these glorious illustrations so much! Really love the first image of John Leaping, and then the pages with the movement of his steps – so much joy comes through, and dance is joy.

Jules – THAT POEM. Stopped me in my tracks. Wow. Hooray for that deliciable meal with friends, and so much yes to Jeevan forever.

    My kicks this week:
    1) Made it through last week, which felt like it lasted a whole month.
    2) Walks with Daisy in the sunshine.
    3) The #RememberAugust game photos on Insta and Twitter are amazing, lots of artists doing super cool and inventive work in a very Griffin & Sabine way. (Which game creator Shing Yin Khor said was one of the inspirations while making the game.)
    4) Finding Sweating Bullets is on imdb tv. It’s a very silly show about a PI in Florida that I used to watch in the early 90’s so its a total comfort watch. (It was shown as Sweating Bullets in New Mexico, which was where I was living at the time.)
    5) Gave my old bookshelves away!
    6) Pancakes for breakfast.
    7) Three day weekend.
7.5) Daisy had a vet appointment this week as I had concerns and vet said, nope, she’s doing great, just old age. So yay for my 15 year old rescue dog living her best life.

    Have a great week Imps!

  4. Hi Imps! Go Kate, go John, go everyone who needs gentle encouragement to share their gifts and feel supported!

    Jules: That’s a pretty good word. 🙂

    Rachel: Yay Daisy!!!

My kicks from the past week:
    1) Walks
    2) Conversation
    3) Salad
    4) Water
    5) Air
    6) Space
    7) Quick

  5. Little Willow – love your kicks, especially 1-3 and 6 this week!

  6. Rachel, Griffin & Sabine really takes me back. I’ll have to look up #RememberAugust. Big ol’ hug to Daisy.

Little Willow: I used to be known for my good salads, but I seem to have lost my touch. I should get creative with them again. Hope you have another good week!
