7-Imp’s 7 Kicks #801: Featuring Molly Brooks

h1 July 3rd, 2022 by jules

Hello, Imps! I’m going to continue with a theme this week — I posted mid-week about a new children’s graphic novel that I love — and share some spreads today from yet another graphic novel, Kathryn Ormsbee’s Growing Pangs (Random House, May 2022), illustrated by Molly Brooks and colored by Bex Glendining and Elise Schuenke. This is the story of Katie, who is a rising sixth grader. She’s homeschooled (I love the way this graphic novel takes on the stereotypes that homeschooled students often face), and she struggles with worry — OCD, to be precise. It’s good stuff, and I have a review over at the Horn Book, should you want to read more about it.

That is here, and below are some spreads.

Enjoy!

Note for any new readers: 7-Imp’s 7 Kicks is a weekly meeting ground for taking some time to reflect on Seven(ish) Exceptionally Fabulous, Beautiful, Interesting, Hilarious, or Otherwise Positive Noteworthy Things from the past week, whether book-related or not, that happened to you. New kickers are always welcome.

* * * Jules’s Kicks * * *

My kicks, one to seven, are that I’m about to head out for a short vacation. And I have short kicks too, because I’m scrambling to get stuff done before I leave. But I’m grateful to have the opportunity to go.

What are YOUR kicks this week?

  1. Love that this graphic novel tackles OCD and the oh-so-common anxiety of navigating new experiences and changing friendships.

Jules – have so much fun on your vacation!!

    My kicks this week:
    1) Read “The Girl Who Drank The Moon” by Kelly Barnhill and loved it so much.
    2) Started reading “The Ogress and the Orphans”.
    3) Listening to Reshma Saujani narrate the audio of her book “Brave, Not Perfect”
    4) A long, shady walk in the middle of the week.
    5) Making time to get a much-needed massage.
    6) Drinking the really good champagne.
    7) This whole thread by Kelly Barnhill: https://twitter.com/kellybarnhill/status/1532733465652772866

Bonus: Having the long weekend to work on a garden project and to rest.

    Have a great week, Imps!

  2. Hi Imps! Hi Molly! Yay for fellow Annie fans.

    Jules: Have a wonderful vacation!

Rachel: Rest up and enjoy the garden time!

    My kicks:
    1) Visits
    2) Warm breakfasts
    3) Playful
    4) Rest
    5) Space
    6) Speech
    7) Time

  3. Rachel, reading The Girl Who Drank the Moon out loud to my daughters is one of my favorite memories. And I had to stop and cry while they waited patiently. I have the Ogress book, and my oldest has read it but it’s still on my list. Did you read When Women Were Dragons yet? I can’t remember. I’d like to be a dragon right about now. Also, YAY MASSAGES. Nice way to treat yourself.

Little Willow: Breakfast is the best meal. Those kicks add up to a week lived well.

Have a good week, you all! Thanks, as always, for stopping by and for tolerating the weeks when I’m in a hurry!
