“The next day seemed to last forever. But finally, when the Moon was shining over the lake and the summer wind was ruffling the leaves of the trees, Chris ran next door.”

I’ve got a review over at BookPage of Chris Hadfield’s The Darkest Dark (Little, Brown, September 2016)), illustrated by The Fan Brothers. That review is here, and I’ve got a couple of spreads from it to share here at 7-Imp today.

You may have seen from earlier this year The Fan Brothers’ The Night Gardener. If you didn’t see it, it’s your lucky day: You can see a handful of spreads from it here at their site.

Note for any new readers: 7-Imp’s 7 Kicks is a weekly meeting ground for taking some time to reflect on Seven(ish) Exceptionally Fabulous, Beautiful, Interesting, Hilarious, or Otherwise Positive Noteworthy Things from the past week, whether book-related or not, that happened to you. New kickers are always welcome.

* * * Jules’ Kicks * * *

1) SOLD HOUSE! No longer have two mortgages. So. excited. about this. ! Can only speak. in. bursts.

2) The 2016 Kirkus Prize finalists. Such a good group, especially in the category of Young Readers’ Literature.

3) I’m not terribly familiar with their music but really enjoyed this interview with The Handsome Family.

4) This has all kinds of good, new music in it and …

5) It made me want to up and buy John Paul White’s new album, which I did, and it is good.

6) News that Sam Phillips is working on a new album.

7) Tonight, Parnassus Books will kick off its piggy bank auction to raise money for my friend with cancer and for the Book Industry Charitable Foundation, or BINC, which helps booksellers in need. A local news channel did a story about it:

If any of you want to bid on these wonderful piggy banks, made my a whole slew of talented authors (of books for all ages) and illustrators, the info is here, including a link to the online auction, starting today.

What are YOUR kicks this week?

    1. So glad to be back. Was traveling last week. No signal.
    2. Finished The Truth According to Use by Annie Barrows. Such a good read.
    3. Started Miss Peregrine’s School for Peculiar Children.
    4. Created a FB page to post as a poet and photographer…my author’s page.
    5. Preparing for Poetry Camp in Bellingham, WA. Can’t wait.
    6. Worked on my manuscript.
    7. Wrote a couple poems that make me happy.
    Have a great week.

  3. Jone, ooh, I’ll have to go find your FB page. … I want to read MPS too. One day.

Little Willow: Break a leg, as always, at any and all rehearsals!

Have a good week, you two.

  4. Such fun and lovely illustrations with the moon! Love the colors too.

Happy fall! Have a wonderful week Imps!

  5. Rachel, I LOVE YOUR LAST KICK. Hear, hear! … I’m jealous of your friends who saw the new museum. I so badly want to see it.

Also, speaking of donuts, my girls told me last night I smell like a donut shop (or at least the shirt I was wearing did). They are SUPPOSED to be at the age where they find me embarrassing (which I realize could still happen), yet both of them lean in to me and smell me and go, “ahhhhhhh.” They crarck me up.
