Note for any new readers: 7-Imp’s 7 Kicks is a weekly meeting ground for taking some time to reflect on Seven(ish) Exceptionally Fabulous, Beautiful, Interesting, Hilarious, or Otherwise Positive Noteworthy Things from the past week, whether book-related or not, that happened to you. New kickers are always welcome.

* * * Jules’ Kicks * * *

1) This past week was National Library Week.

2) CBS News-coverage of Renée Watson and the I, Too, Arts Collective. Now, even more people will know about it. (I can’t figure out how to embed the video, but you can watch it here, if you’re so inclined.)

3) Not long now: Sister Rosetta Tharpe into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame!

4) I missed Jason Reynolds speak at Parnassus Books this week (let’s not discuss it — I’m still bummed about it), but I saw this tweet . . .

. . . and I’ve been thinking about that wonderful statement all week.

5) Neil Patrick Harris.

6) New music this week from Laura Marling, Janelle Monae (VAGINA PANTS!), and Neko Case:

7) I have no opinion one way or the other about Taylor Swift, but the writing in this piece (from one of my favorite podcasters) made me laugh, particularly “an exploding toilet of governmental crisis and global conflict” and “a ceaseless parade of demented calliope music and blood-spattered clowns, each emitting a piercing, unbroken shriek that lasts until infinity.”

What are YOUR kicks this week?

  1. Hello Hello Imps! Hello Hello Brendan and the colorful zoo!

Jules: I love how many music-related kicks you have this week! Good music fuels me.

  3. Love the art this week – especially the ones of “Hello Neighbor. Hello Friend.”

Jules – such great kicks this week – can’t wait to listen to you links! The writing in that review on TS’s cover is hysterical.

LW – hell yeah to standing up for yourself! And I envision you doing kick 1 on the daily.

Jone – that author visit with Eric Ode looked like great fun. And hooray for books in the mail for students.

    My quick kicks:
    1) More time at the beach (but back now).
    2) Finished The 57 Bus and absolutely loved it. So well done & such a great job showing how much goes on in a criminal case, & how complicated juvenile cases are & how kids shouldn’t be treated the same as adults in criminal justice system.
    3) Getting to watch Beyonce at Coachella via the magic of the interwebs. Who Run the World?!! Girls!
    4) This tweet/email about The Mixed-Up Files & a teacher who has taught it every year. Books are awesome. Teachers are awesome. https://twitter.com/jiatolentino/status/888413994427527168
    5) The tulips blooming in my yard.

Jone: What a poetry-filled week. I like the sound of #5. When does summer break start for you all?

Rachel: So glad you finished the book and so glad you loved it. I thought of you as I read it. … I’m jealous of your third kick. I didn’t realize it was view-able online. … So glad you got to see the beach. Thanks for sharing that wonderful tweet. That’s good stuff.

Have a good week, you all!

  5. Rachel, I love the coast. Never enough time.
Jules, June 15. It’s not just summer break. I’m retiring. My gift to studwnt is hopeful.3 books each.
