7-Imp’s 7 Kicks #587: Featuring Benjamin Flouw

h1 May 20th, 2018 by jules

“Every evening, sitting in his armchair, Fox likes to leaf through old botany books,
looking for the next new plant to add to his collection.”

I wrote a review for BookPage of a picture book originally published in French last year — Benjamin Flouw’s The Golden Glow (Tundra, May 2018). That review is here.

I’m following up with some art from the book today. . . .

“The forest is quiet and peaceful first thing in the morning.
Only a few birds are awake and chirping.
Fox studies the plants and trees that line the path.
They’re all ones he’s seen before.”

“After a long trek through the forest, Fox and Wolf finally reach a large steep clearing dotted with flowers of every color.”

“No need for an encyclopedia here! Fox can name all of them . . .”

“Once he’s pitched his tent and rolled out his sleeping bag,
Fox sits himself down to watch the sun set.”

Note for any new readers: 7-Imp’s 7 Kicks is a weekly meeting ground for taking some time to reflect on Seven(ish) Exceptionally Fabulous, Beautiful, Interesting, Hilarious, or Otherwise Positive Noteworthy Things from the past week, whether book-related or not, that happened to you. New kickers are always welcome.

* * * Jules’ Kicks * * *

1) It’s almost school’s-out for my girls.

2) A good (if very hot) day at Tennessee’s RenFest.

3) I didn’t watch the royal wedding, but I read about it — and it was super kick’y and groundbreaking, it seems, in all kinds of wonderful ways.

4) This kick is a couple of weeks old, but: Childish Gambino.

5) A blast from the past in the mail.

6) Speaking to a big group of elementary students about picture books.

7) Work has been unusually busy, but the kick is that I’m managing to get (nearly) almost everything else done. I hope to get a breather soon.

What are YOUR kicks this week?

  1. I love the title and those illustrations glow. Gorgeous.
Jules, almost summer vacation? I wish I could herr speak on picture books to students.

    My kicks:
    1. Seeing a friend for lunch.
    2. Dinner and the play, Sister Act.
    3. Receiving a piece of art in the mail.
    4. Gardening with my daughter.
    5. The Royal wedding.
    6. The look on a student which I handed her a poetry response from her postcard.
    7. Enjoying the school days as they wind diwn.
    Have a great week.

  2. Good morning, Imps and foxes!

Thanks for sharing your work, Benjamin. I like the colours.

Jules: Happy almost-summer to your daughters, and happy almost-break to you!

Jone: Sounds like a lot of lovely entertainment and art all around you.

My kicks from the past week:
    1) Reactions
    2) Shared
    3) Compliation
    4) Writing
    5) Recitation
    6) Remembering
    7) Conjecturing

  3. Happy Sunday Imps! What a gorgeous book. It makes me think of my mother, who was the big gardener and reader in our family and would’ve loved this.

Jules – yay for busy weeks and getting almost everything done. And for summer vacation coming soon.

Jone – enjoy those winding down school days, hooray for lunch with friends and diner and plays.

LW – your last three kicks sound like a powerful poetic spell.

    My quick kicks:
    1) Having time to post after missing a few weeks.
    2) I second Childish Gambino as a kick. The video for This Is America is so so powerful.
    3) Work is busy, which is always good.
    4) Goodbye party for a friend moving overseas for work. Fun celebration and chance to catch up with friends I hadn’t seen in a while.
    5) My mailwoman writing me a note about loving all the blooms in my front yard/garden.
    6) Sunshine!
    7) Daisy and her fun sweet personality reminding me to slow down and enjoy the moment.
7.5) The Royal Wedding – something about seeing 2 people so besotted with each other (and some of the other milestones associated with that union) was such a nice change of pace from some of the craziness in the world right now, and a little piece of hope for the future.

    Have a wonderful week Imps!

  4. Jone: When’s your last day?!

LW: Ooh, are you writing scripts?

Rachel: I especially love that fifth kick. How thoughtful.

I hope you all have a great week!
