7-Imp’s 7 Kicks #740: Featuring
Hannah Carmona and Anna Cunha

“With one step, I move away from the familiar. With another step, I walk into the unknown. Hand in hand, we stand strong. Bravely, through the dark, narrow
throat of the beast, we enter its belly where we will take flight to new adventures.”

Over at Tennessee’s Chapter 16, I had the opportunity to talk to author Hannah Carmona about her newest picture book, Anita and the Dragons (Lantana, April 2021). As you will read at our chat, which is here, it’s a story of emigration, based on her own mother’s experience of moving from the Dominican Republic to the U.S.

Today here at 7-Imp, I’ve some spreads from the book, illustrated by Anna Cunha.

  1. Hi Imps! Hope you are all doing well.

Hello, Hannah and Anna! What beautiful art.

    Jules: YES accountability!!!

My kicks from the past week:
    1) Accountability
    2) Truth
    3) Ease
    4) Timing
    5) Good
    6) Strong
    7) Real

  2. Little Willow, “ease.” I like that. Here’s hoping this week is just as smooth for you.

  3. Love this story and the warm colors. The dancing and the dragon/plane on the runway are particular favorites.

Jules – so much yes to accountability. And so much love for Ava, she is such an incredible champion of other talent, which is so lovely to see. Disco bathrooms should really become a new design must-have.

Little Willow – agree with Jules – ease is definitely a great kick. Love the flow of your kicks this week, especially the last 3 – Good, Strong and Real are all such solid kicks.

    My kicks this week:
    1) Several days of sunshine.
    2) Making mini veggie quiches from scratch with fresh eggs – yum.
    3) Shadow and Bone on Netflix. Now I need to read the books.
    4) Did a re-watch of Josie and the Pussycats for its 20th anniversary – still a fun girl power movie.
    5) Finished reading Take Good Care of the Garden and the Dogs: A True Story of Bad Breaks and Small Miracles by Heather Lende, and it was a soothing read, full of the ups and downs of life, and the family and friends that travel through it with us.
    6) Scoping out airbnbs in other countries for potential far in the future vacations.
    7) Spring flowers popping up.
7.5) Daisy continuing to recover well and enjoying naps in the sunshine.

    Have a great week Imps!

  4. Rachel, so glad Daisy is recovering well. That’s the best news. Love the eternal optimism of your sixth kick (and sunhine AND spring flowers). I might have to watch Shadow and Bone soon.

Have a good week, you two!

  5. And thanks again, Rachel, for the list last week of where to watch Oscar-nominated animated and live action shorts. I watched most of them yesterday.
