I’ve a review over at the Horn Book of Brendan Wenzel’s newest picture book, Inside Cat (Chronicle, October 2021).

That review is here, and below are some spreads.

Enjoy!

finds a view wherever it goes.”

“Wanders. Wonders. Gazes. Gapes.
Sees the world through many shapes.”

Note for any new readers: 7-Imp’s 7 Kicks is a weekly meeting ground for taking some time to reflect on Seven(ish) Exceptionally Fabulous, Beautiful, Interesting, Hilarious, or Otherwise Positive Noteworthy Things from the past week, whether book-related or not, that happened to you. New kickers are always welcome.

Sorry to keep it brief this week, but I have a final exam to do in one of the classes I’m currently taking. My kicks, one to seven, are that this class is almost over (though I’ve also enjoyed it).

What are YOUR kicks this week?

  1. That looks like a fun book. Think of my friends with cats.
I came here today to mainly lean in to this little community. I just found out my friend and former colleague just lost her second son (she has/had three) to Fanconi Amemia, an insidious disease. Her first son died in 2003 and now her second one, who was able to be an adult, marry, and have a child and now is with his older brother.

Hug your loved ones. Life is so short. Thank you for this community. Love you all.

  2. Hi Imps, Brendan, and Inside Cat, with lots of hugs to everyone’s pets!

    Jules: Go Jules go!

Jone: My thoughts are with your colleague and their loved ones.

    My kicks:
    1) Music
    2) Musicals
    3) Being moved
    4) Being inspired
    5) Laughter
    6) Ideas
    7) Good dreams

  3. Oh, Jone. I’m so sorry. Big hug to you (one I wish I could give in person). I’m glad you came here. We are always here for you. I send good wishes to your friend. Such loss for her.

Little Willow: Your second kick is especially poignant, given the Sondheim loss. One of my bucket list items in life is to see YOU perform live one day, and a musical would be IDEAL! Thanks for the “go”s. I am ALMOST DONE WITH THIS FINAL this morning! YAY. Clearly, I took a break to come read all of your kicks.

  4. Aw, thank you, Jules! You are so kind. Rock that final! The tributes to Sondheim are so lovely.

  5. Love the fast pace of Indoor Cat til Indoor Cat sees outside in all it’s breathtaking colors.

Jules – Good luck on that final exam!

Jone – sending thoughts of love and healing to you and your colleague and her family. So very sorry for her loss.

Little Willow – love all your kicks, and that they could be read as a tribute to Sondheim. Love kick 7 of good dreams the most this week.

    My kicks:
    1) Seeing all the photos of letters Sondheim wrote in response to fans and aspiring performers and composers who wrote to him. All that talent and kindness and caring about future artists and caring about humans in general. Inspiring and moving.
    2) Discovering (or actually rediscovering) the band The Album Leaf, and their gorgeous melancholy instrumentals. I’d first heard Jimmy LaValle’s work on Scandal and been haunted by it ever since. Diving into his other scores.
    3) Read Molly Brodak’s “Bandit: A Daughter’s Memoir” and her writing is so clear and true it took my breath away at times.
    4) Getting news of a good result for a client the day before Thanksgiving.
    5) Sunshine holding for a short hike on Thanksgiving day.
    6) Trying Tai Chi for the first time. The gentle flow is very soothing.
    7) Listening to Sondheim all weekend. So many gorgeous songs, so many incredible performances.
7.5) Quiet time with Daisy, she is the best company for morning coffee and a good book.

    Have a good week Imps!

  6. Little Willow, I love the laughter and good dreams.

  7. Rachel, love that fourth kick, and I’m glad you got some sunshine. I’ve always wanted to try Tai Chi. (I always think of Lisa Simpson saying she likes Tai Chi and chai tea.) Hello to Daisy!

Have a good week, you all
