7-Imp’s 7 Kicks #521: Featuring Melissa Castrillon

h1 February 12th, 2017 by jules

I’ve got a review over at BookPage of Nina Laden’s If I Had a Little Dream (Paula Wiseman Books, February 2017), illustrated by Melissa Castrillon. That is here, if you’d like to read all about the book.

This is a snug, gentle book, and it’s Castillon’s debut as an illustrator. Here are a couple more spreads.

Treasure would make me glow inside, / more than I could measure.”

Note for any new readers: 7-Imp’s 7 Kicks is a weekly meeting ground for taking some time to reflect on Seven(ish) Exceptionally Fabulous, Beautiful, Interesting, Hilarious, or Otherwise Positive Noteworthy Things from the past week, whether book-related or not, that happened to you. New kickers are always welcome.

* * * Jules’ Kicks * * *

1) Heading to Michigan this week to talk about picture books for the Children’s Literacy Network. I’m excited to meet folks. Also, I definitely knew I wanted to go when the person who asked me said, “Children’s books require art that speaks to their inner artist and gives their mind a window or a secret trap door from commercial bombardment and the drudgery of text books.”

2) Sending, sharing books. Hoping they are loved.

3) Reading Fahrenheit 451 to my girls.

4) This voice.

5) My Obama print arrived! Thank you, Matt, for doing this. He’s donating all proceeds to the ACLU.

6) New music from Lowland Hum.

7) A new place to gather and eat.

What are YOUR kicks this week?

  1. I love Melissa’s color pallette. It’s a must get book.
Jules, have fun in Michigan, it sounds like a fabulous event.
    My kicks:
    1. CYBILS Poetry has a winner and it is…oh you have to wait until Tuesday to find out. When they’re announced.
    2. Early morning bird songs.
    3. Poetry postcards.
    4. Poetry Rocks.
    5. Creating.
    6. Reading.
    7. Writing Critique meeting.
    Have a great week.

  2. Good morning, Imps!

Hello, Melissa! Congratulations on your debut. Here’s to making dreams come true.

Jules: When I recommend/give Fahrenheit 451 to people, I point out that if the events in this book were true, this book wouldn’t exist: it wouldn’t be in their hands. I love it when that makes them hold their books tighter. I’m listening to Lowland Hum and Ala.Ni now as I type this, at your recommendation. I’m going to email you names of some soundalikes.

Jone: Yay for creating, reading, sharing, all of the above.

My kicks from the past week:
    1) Beginning
    2) Finishing
    3) Continuing
    4) Continuous
    5) Forward
    6) Global
    7) Okay, then

  3. Such fun illustrations to match the rhyming verse.

Jules – have a great time in Michigan! Listening to Ala.Ni now. Finding new places to eat is a favorite pastime of mine – what kind of food?

Jone – are Poetry Postcards over? Yay for creating, writing & reading.

LW – Love your last 3 kicks, especially kick 7.

    My kicks this week:
    1) Finished Peter Carey’s “True History of the Kelly Gang.” It was interesting, but nowhere near as good as “Oscar & Lucinda.”
    2) Yay Lawyers! Very proud of lawyers this past week.
    3) Sunshine! (Its been rainy.)
    4) Saw “Obit” https://www.vanessagould.com/film at the Portland International Film Festival on Friday. Really fascinating, funny & lovely film.
    5) Moving some plants back outdoors again. Signs of spring to come.
    6) Cuddles with Daisy.
    7) A get together with friends old & new.
7.5) Making plans for the next big adventure.

    Have a great week everyone!

  4. Back tomorrow, you all. Promise!

    more soon ….

  5. LW: Continuing, continuous, and global…live
Rachel, I agree, yay for sunshine. My Poetry postcard project is finished but am participating in Postcards for Peace. Sending out 27 postcards to a variety of poets.

  6. Jone: Thanks for the Cybils reminder!

Little Willow: Okay, then. I love that last kick, okay, then.

Rachel: We actually got a new dining room table. (I didn’t mean to sound cryptic, but I guess I did!) We splurged, since we like to eat together as a family, and got one from an Amish furniture store. We spent quite a while thinking about what we wanted and really customized it. Ordered it in November, and it is finally here. It took that long to be built. It is beautiful and was really worth the wait! … Yes, YAY LAWYERS. And thanks for the book and movie recommendations.

Have a good week, you all. Sorry I didn’t make it back here till today.

  7. Jone – Postcards for Peace sounds nice.

Jules – wow, that sounds like a great table. Dining together, and what you are dining on can be really important. Very cool that y’all were so thoughtful & able to custom order what you wanted.
